In his 18th book of fiction, T. C. Boyle wildly impresses some critics (as he often does) but leaves a few critics wanting more. The slick, page-turning plot becomes "sadly undermined by a forced, slap-dash ending that feels as if it had been grafted on at the last minute" (New York Times). That aside, Boyle's first entry in the suspense genre is a welcome addition that showcases his rich characterizations and high-flying prose. In Talk Talk, the ease of assuming a new identity appears frighteningly simple, while the annoyances of life for the hearing-impaired ring loud and clear.

*Starred Review* Boyle sculpts his bold but meticulous new novel out of a frightening premise, a case of identity theft, which, with terrorism, is one of the twin (and random and anonymous) threats faced in today's world. In fact, the case of identity theft here is an extreme version: identity takeover. The storyline he so carefully, intelligently, and knowledgeably crafts starts innocently enough when hearing-impaired college instructor Dana Halter is stopped on her way to the dentist for running a traffic sign. The witnessing policeman is quickly joined by a whole troop of cops, and Dana is led off to jail in handcuffs and treated like a common criminal. As it turns out, she has a rap sheet and a list of warrants a mile long--obviously (obvious to her, that is) a case of someone else using her name. This person has stolen her identity to construct an entire, false life, from purchasing a house and car to marrying under the assumed name. Dana and her boyfriend embark on a dangerous journey not only to discover the identity of the thief but also to stop him, and here the novel develops into a transcontinental----and breathtaking--thriller. Boyle never loses touch with his primary intention: a dual exploration of temperaments; namely, how particular environments can produce entirely different ways of coping in life. Now This Is Scary

Instead of spending your time reading about a killer plant, get your hands on this all to real thriller that will have your pulse pounding at the prospect of identity theft. Dana is an attractive successful teacher with a loving fiancee and a good job as a teacher at a school for the deaf. Running a stop sign one morning to work, she is pulled over to be cited, and suddenly finds herself being arrested, being told there are multiple warrents out for her arrest. However that is only the beginning. Being steeped into this nightmarish brew only gets more intense when she and boyfriend learn who the thief is, and set out to exact revenge. Chapters switch between Dana, Bridger, her loyal companion, and the low life thief Peck who happens to be a gourmet cook with a penchant for the better things in life.(As long as they're free.)
It's been awhile since I've read something I literally could not put down, and although the end was a bit of a letdown, I recognize any disappoinment was due in large part to my incredble investment in the outcome I needed for these characters. Therein lies the brilliance and terror of the book: The horrible recognition that, "this could happen to me."

compelling, thought provoking, and entertaining

This book is advertised as Boyle's first suspence novel and that it is. I found myself passing up other diversions in order to get back to the story. Dana, who is deaf and the victim of identity theift, is kind of hard to understand--and I'm not only referring to her voice. Her boyfriend is kind of incompetent. The bad guy is a great cook who appreciates the finer things that other peoples' money can buy. I liked learning about the world of the deaf. The problem of identity theift--our justice system doesn't seem to be able to respond to it effectively--makes a great suspenseful and frightening plot device.
I thought the ending was disappointing, but maybe the author's point was 'nothing good can come from this'.

Better than average but doesn't really deliver by the end

This is my first Boyle book and while the writing is top notch, it is clear that he struggles with this type of genre fiction. The writing carries the day as there isn't much story. Boyle sets tone and mood very well and clearly he has done his homework on the hearing impaired aspect of the character Dana but at some point the storyline loses steam and while the characters are interesting, the story doesn't advance much. There is a bit of excitement towards the end, but 3/4 of the way through I had pretty much figured out how things were going to end. All that said, Boyle's writing and descriptive style is superb so I never wanted to stop reading the book. Three stars because he is clearly a greater talent than this book displays.
