Industrial Air Quality and Ventilation: Controlling Dust Emissions, by Ivan Nikolayevich Logachev, Konstantin Ivanovich Logachev

In the field of industrial ventilation and air quality, a lack of adequate analysis for aerodynamic processes, as well as a shortage of properly equipped computer facilities, has forced specialists to rely on an empirical approach to find answers in the past. Commonly based on crude models, practical data, or countertypes, the answers often offered have been imprecise.

Summarizing the results of the authors’ research conducted over the past 40 years, Industrial Air Quality and Ventilation: Controlling Dust Emissions examines air injection in granular material streams and defines the closed hood capacity widely used in the mechanical reprocessing of minerals. This book introduces a methodological approach (dynamic theory) that broadens the range of granular materials, including inter-heated material. It considers the mechanisms of ejecting air in different variations from uniform air motion processes in closed chutes to the forming of accelerated air streams in a free particles flow. It also provides the scientific basics of calculation for local exhaust ventilation dust production (aspiration), and enables readers to accurately apply these results to the mechanical processing of various materials.

• Describes the engineering methods for calculating the amounts of aspirated air for various industries and technological units

• Assists in developing new environmentally clean and competitive advanced technologies and equipment for the processing of granular materials

• Proposes new technical solutions that are more sanitary and require less energy and water consumption

• Looks at specific industry examples of localization of release

Industrial Air Quality and Ventilation: Controlling Dust Emissions proposes low power consumption-based technical solutions and outlines more accurate methods of calculating recommended performance. Richly illustrated with practical suggestions and techniques, the text includes real-world applications in the field of aerodynamic processes within gravitational fluxes of granular material, and encourages the development of new environmentally clean and competitive advanced technologies and equipment for the processing of granular materials.

Review

"This book summarises the results of the authors research conducted over the past 40 years. …The conclusion reminds readers that the authors original research was aimed at improving the theoretical basis for design of ventilated suction hoods used for bulk material transfer groups and then to present their basic findings and resulting conclusions."
―ROSPA

"The book addresses the very complex topic of dust generation and fugitive emissions in industry. It provides detailed analyses, theories and data of numerous application areas ― with the aim of improving the design and operation of efficient dust control systems. I have not seen such a detailed study of this complex area before, and I am confident that the book will generate a great deal of interest in both the scientific and industry communities."
―Peter Wypych, Professor, University of Wollongong

"A solid academic treatise on the evolution of dust and particulates from conveying system transfer points, with a good amount of useful data to go with the theoretical equations."
―Eric Anderson, Consulting Engineer

Arctic Mirrors: Russia and the Small Peoples of the North (Cornell Paperbacks), by Yuri Slezkine

For over five hundred years the Russians wondered what kind of people their Arctic and sub-Arctic subjects were. "They have mouths between their shoulders and eyes in their chests," reported a fifteenth-century tale. "They rove around, live of their own free will, and beat the Russian people," complained a seventeenth-century Cossack. "Their actions are exceedingly rude. They do not take off their hats and do not bow to each other," huffed an eighteenth-century scholar. They are "children of nature" and "guardians of ecological balance," rhapsodized early nineteenth-century and late twentieth-century romantics. Even the Bolsheviks, who categorized the circumpolar foragers as "authentic proletarians," were repeatedly puzzled by the "peoples from the late Neolithic period who, by virtue of their extreme backwardness, cannot keep up either economically or culturally with the furious speed of the emerging socialist society."

Whether described as brutes, aliens, or endangered indigenous populations, the so-called small peoples of the north have consistently remained a point of contrast for speculations on Russian identity and a convenient testing ground for policies and images that grew out of these speculations. In Arctic Mirrors, a vividly rendered history of circumpolar peoples in the Russian empire and the Russian mind, Yuri Slezkine offers the first in-depth interpretation of this relationship. No other book in any language links the history of a colonized non-Russian people to the full sweep of Russian intellectual and cultural history. Enhancing his account with vintage prints and photographs, Slezkine reenacts the procession of Russian fur traders, missionaries, tsarist bureaucrats, radical intellectuals, professional ethnographers, and commissars who struggled to reform and conceptualize this most "alien" of their subject populations.

Slezkine reconstructs from a vast range of sources the successive official policies and prevailing attitudes toward the northern peoples, interweaving the resonant narratives of Russian and indigenous contemporaries with the extravagant images of popular Russian fiction. As he examines the many ironies and ambivalences involved in successive Russian attempts to overcome northern—and hence their own—otherness, Slezkine explores the wider issues of ethnic identity, cultural change, nationalist rhetoric, and not-so European colonialism.

From Library Journal
The "small peoples" are the 26 indigenous ethnic groups of the Arctic tundra and subarctic taiga whose traditions lie in hunting, trapping, fishing, and reindeer herding. Historian Slezkine studies the relationships between these groups and the Russians, who entered their land in the 11th century, colonized it, and transformed it over the centuries thereafter. By examining these circumpolar peoples through Russian historical documents and literary accounts, Slezkine brings out images that become reflections of the Russians themselves. He is interested in both the political and intellectual nature of the encounter and seeks to reveal the importance of the complexities of this relationship through history. The study is thoroughly researched and well written for the scholar in the field or the informed reader. For larger libraries and regional collections.

From Booklist
Since the groundbreaking 1922 silent documentary Nanook of the North, not much has changed in the everyday life of the Alaskan Eskimos. Nor has much changed for the Arctic people of Russia, despite the incursions of many armies, both military and missionary. Despite their obvious primitiveness, the small Russian tribes of the North saw perhaps lesser levels of brutality by the Stalin regime and beyond, and the most obvious reason for this is the weather. Slezkine spends some time on the northerners' ability to cope with the climate, but mostly concentrates on the changing face of the Soviet Union in the microcosm of the northern people: from "savage Indians" to the slow evolution from icebound hunters and trappers to industrialized laborers. The book is an intellectual treatise, and occasionally Slezkine's clinical language can be as dry as a Siberian plain, but his descriptions of the trials of the northern Russians help make this book an invaluable look at the people the totalitarian Soviets forgot. Joe Collins

"In this great book, Slezkine has provided us with a comprehensive history of the encounter between the Russians and the indigenous peoples of the Arctic and northwestern Pacific. . . . Arctic Mirrors has already become required reading for anyone interested in the history or anthropology of Siberia, and it will soon establish itself as an invaluable contribution to the growing field of studies on the newly independent states."―American Anthropologist

"This fascinating and authoritative book covers the history of relations between Russian civilization and the hunter-gatherer peoples of northern Eurasia. Slezkine charts changing Russian policies toward these circumpolar cultures beginning with the fur trade . . . in the eleventh century, through the expansion of the Russian empire under the tsars, to the modernization policies of the Soviets. He argues that attention to this kind of history reveals as much about the construction of Russian identity as it does about the cultural identity of the northern 'others.' This book is an important addition to the growing literature on comparative colonialisms."―Virginia Quarterly Review

"This book sheds light on the history of a neglected people and reveals Russian self-perceptions refracted through the prism of their attitudes toward the natives. . . . It is a beautifully written, fascinating book that greatly enhances our understanding of Russia as a multiethnic state."―American Historical Review

"Engagingly written and with much ironic wit throughout, Arctic Mirrors is a pleasure to read."―Journal of Historical Geography

"This enlightening book should be read by all interested in the (former) Soviet north, northern people in general, or the relation between nation states and the various 'small peoples' of the earth."―Ethnohistory

"Slezkine has used a massive array of sources to write a fascinating history of northern Siberia's natives and their relations with the Russians over the last four centuries."―W. Bruce Lincoln, Northern Illinois University

Native Siberians as Russian foil
By Alexander D. King
This is a great book. Slezkine has provided us with a comprehensive history of the encounter between the Russians and the indigenous peoples of the Arctic and northwestern Pacific. Based on original archival sources whenever possible, the narrative is thick in detail and rich in analysis. I enjoyed his writing style, but his arguments can be difficult to follow for non-academics. He focuses on the “numerically small” peoples of Siberia, who are often subordinated in accounts which privilege ethnic Russians, Komi and Sakha (Yakut) peoples in the east. Believing that ideas matter, Slezkine grounds the events and policies of his history in the intellectual fashions current at the time. Thus, we get a cultural and intellectual history of conquest and administration structuring the narrative which tacks between the Russian and native Siberian points of view.
Cossacks did not establish any “New Russia” because they did not understand Siberia as a discovery. The Princes of Rus long knew about “Ostiaks” to the east, and sixteenth century empire-building consisted of conquering foreign peoples throughout the continuous Eurasian landmass. There were no breakthroughs across great divides like the Atlantic. At the same time, the conquerors knew they were among foreign peoples, and it was imperative to get the “real” names from the locals. Foreigners were expected to remain foreign; they had only to pay their tribute and express appropriate obsequies to the Tsar, who discouraged the church from converting foreign tribute-payers to Orthodox Russians. Not that Russian conquest was less brutal than Spanish or English conquests elsewhere, but early Russian conquerors’ open-ended world-view did not force new people and territories into closed, Old World categories.
The rules of the relationship changed during the era of Peter the Great. With the coming of the Enlightenment to Russia, “foreigners” (of a different land) became “aliens” (of different birth). Peter’s fascination with western science led to several scientific expeditions into the north and the east to enumerate and classify everything (and every one) under the dominion of the Tsar. Groups were distinguished by language in a typology of peoples that has persisted to the present day. This second encounter “between the Russian and the native northerners was that between perfection and crudity” (p. 56). German anti-primitivism held sway in Russian thought, and the savages were certainly not noble.
By the close of the eighteenth century the increasing currency of the French Encyclopedists in intellectual circles paralleled the rise of Russian sentimentalism, and a different picture of natives emerged. As disease and warfare decimated the tribute payers, they became ennobled and in need of “protection.” Under Alexander I, reformers established the first comprehensive statement of global policy on the natives with the Statute of Alien Administration in Siberia in 1822. Classifying all (non-Russian) peoples into one of three categories (settled, nomadic, or wanderers), this statute structured native status for the next one hundred years.
Arctic Mirrors presents the story of the rise and fall of Russian anthropology for the first time. This is a significant contribution to the history of anthropology as an international discipline. More than half of the book deals with the Soviet period. Slezkine offers a lucid analysis of the surreal logic of Stalinist social policy and social science, where bureaucrats and scientists alike were often forced to recant truths they adamantly defended only months before in order to save their skins. He also traces the current nationalist ideology largely responsible for the breakup of the Soviet Union to the conscious and consistent ethnic policies of Lenin and Stalin, another legacy of romantic nationalism of the nineteenth century.
Slezkine succeeds in presenting the complexities of a complex encounter. The natives of the north are not passive dupes or innocent victims. Arctic Mirrors has already become required reading for anyone interested in the history or anthropology of Siberia, and it will soon establish itself as an invaluable contribution to the growing field of studies on the Newly Independent States. It also points up interesting parallels and contrasts with other European empires in the Americas, Africa, and Asia.

A Must read
By Seth J. Frantzman
This must read opens the door on the many 'small' peoples of Russias North, who live in Siberia and have for thousands of years, comparable to the native Americans, they were crushed and moved around in soviet times, wiht many different methods applied to make them 'russian' 'christian' or good 'socialists'. This is an excellent account and a great eye opener to the vastness and diversity of the Russian landscape, a tragedy unto itself but the people will be preserved through accounts such as this.

Siberia as a Problem
By Benjamin Trovato
In contrast to Forsyth's History of the Native Peoples of Siberia, this is Siberia as seen by the bureaucrats and thinkers who tried to administer and understand it. There are many detailed quotes and anecdotes, but it does not add up to a coherent history. For the beginner, there is not enough background on who and where the peoples were. Students of the soviet period will be interested the the problem of collectivizing nomadic hunters. So: a good backup, but read Forsyth first.

The Economics of Franchising, by Roger D. Blair, Francine Lafontaine

This book describes in much detail both how and why franchising works. It also analyses the economic tensions that contribute to conflict in the franchisor-frnachisee relationship. The treatment includes a great deal of empirical evidence on franchising, its importance in various segments of the economy, the terms of franchise contracts, and what we know about how all these have evolved over time, especially in the U.S. market. A good many myths are dispelled in the process. The economic analysis of the franchisor-franchisee relationship begins with the observation that for franchisors, franchising is a contractual alternative to vertical integration. Subsequently, the tensions that arise between a franchisor and its franchisees, who in fact are owners of independent businesses, are examined in turn. In particular the authors discuss issues related to product quality control, tying arrangements, pricing, location and territories, advertising, and termination and renewals.

Review
"In The Economics of Franchising, Blair and Lafontaine have provided an exceptionally comprehensive and cogent treatment of franchise law and economics. They have made complex economic analysis accessible and at the same time have revealed the hidden complexity behind some of the naive misconceptions associated with franchising. But what I liked best was their ability to treat each topic with a blend of managerially relevent discussion and formal analysis. It is a book that will appeal to anyone with a business, legal or research interest in franchising." - Patrick Kaufmann, Boston University

"A book on franchising by the experts in this field is a welcome addition. It will be extremely valuable for both teachers and researchers." - Jeffrey M. Perloff, University of California, Berkeley

"Blair and Lafontaine have produced the definitive work on franchising arrangements, a detailed theoretical and empirical analysis that provides fundamental insight not only into the economic relationship between a franchiser and its franchisees but into vertical contractual relationships more generally. The rigorous documentation of how particular terms in the franchise contract solve inherent economic tensions in the relationship is an extremely valuable contribution to our knowledge of how franchising contracts, as well as business arrangements more generally, work." - Benjamin Klein, UCLA

"This superb book will become the standard reference for understanding the economics of franchising. Extending their previous research, these outstanding scholars assemble new data sets to establish basic facts and explode several pervasive myths about franchising. How fast is the already significant amount of franchising growing? Are franchisees more likely to succeed than independent businesses? What are the typical terms of a franchisee's contract and why? The authors answer these and other fascinating questions with a keen economic intuition and with precision. The book is a must reading for students of industrial organization and contracting." - Dennis W. Carlton, University of Chicago

Valuable Tool for Franchisor Business Planning
By Stephen C. Long
The U.S. Government quit collecting data on franchising in 1986. The franchise industry has, for the most part, done a poor job of collecting good data. Blair and Lafontaine collect the data, such as it is, which has been reliably produced on franchising since 1986 and reveal four prevalent myths in franchising. Data are available for all franchisors and are also segmented among industries.

This book will be helpful for the person in a new franchisor operation responsible for creating the economic model, i.e., the initial franchise fee, royalty fees and advertising fees. The book won't be much help without a background of college-level introductory macro- and microeconomics. A basic knowledge of calculus will enable you to follow the analyses but isn't critical to understanding the conclusions. The book also critically analyzes the economic issues which impact franchisor-franchisee tensions.

The Only Real Academic Treatment of Franchising
By Shane
After digging around a lot, I've found that this is the only good academic treatment of the economics of franchising. It is very well written and is of adequate complexity to interest economists while also being simple enough for anybody to understand. It is both a positive and a normative study. The authors have some of the most comprehensive data available about what franchises do, as well as interesting conversation about what they should do. I have the utmost respect for the authors, and I recommend this book to anybody who has an interest in the topic.

Feed your pollinators and bees.....you like to eat and they do too.
By Alyce R. Zellers
A good book to nudge you into planting more beneficial plants for bees and other pollinators. Instead of just buying what looks nice at the store, research and buy shrubs, annuals, and perennials that provide nectar and pollen. We all like to eat so do your part and provide something for all the pollinators. Stop adding sterile plants as they do not benefit anyone...including you. Start being proactive in thinking about the wildlife around you and it cannot be taken for granted that it will always be there without the environment to support and sustain. This books gives you detailed info and pictures to assist plant buyers. Take it with you to the nursery and refer to. Plant more beneficial plants for beneficial pollinators and you will benefit too!!

Portishead's Dummy (33 1/3), by RJ Wheaton

An album which distilled a genre from the musical, cultural, and social ether, Portishead's Dummy was such a complete artistic achievement that its ubiquitous successes threatened to exhaust its own potential. RJ Wheaton offers an impressionistic investigation of Dummy that imitates the cumulative structure of the album itself, piecing together interviews, impressions of time and place, cultural criticism, and a thorough exploration of the music itself.

The approach focuses as much on the reception and response that Dummy engendered as it does on the original production of the album. How is that so many people have, collectively, made a quintessential headphone album into a nightclub album? How have they made the product of a niche local scene into an international success? This is the story of how an innovative, experimental album became the iconic sound for the better part of a decade; and an aesthetic template for the experience of music in the digital age.

one of the strongest entries in a good series
By jafrank
This is probably the single strongest book of the 7 or 8 I've read in the 33 1/3 series. Wheaton strikes an excellent balance between smart, wide-ranging formal analysis and open praise. His attempts to tease apart the individual sounds that go into making the dense, dark, beautiful world of Portishead's music made me rush back to listen to each track of Dummy over and over again, and marvel at just how remarkable their work is. But what is even more impressive is how he successfully shows the resonances between Portishead's music and broader trends in musical/cultural history. The way he hints at the remarkable, tangled web of connections; of technologies, people and geography, which operate both above and beneath our basic daily awareness and how much of Portishead's music does the same. The writing in this book is sharp, engaging and weirdly ominous. Kind of like 'Wandering Star.' I sincerely hope Wheaton writes more books in the future. The 33 1/3 series would be better as a whole if more people had Mr. Wheaton's wide ranging curiosity.

Standout in an Extraordinary Series
By Z. Stiegler
I'm a huge fan of the 33 1/3 series. True, some are hits, some are misses. RJ Wheaton's exegesis on Portishead's Dummy is absolutely in the former camp.

Wheaton artfully weaves background on the album's composition and production with biographical information, all the while making a point to put the album into context - of the times, of its peers, of its genre, of its influences and impact.

The best entries in the 33 1/3 series do two things. First, they make you want to listen to nothing but the album under review for at least a week. Second, they elicit a new appreciation for the album, regardless of how well you know it, or how long you've been a fan. Wheaton's take on Dummy accomplishes both.

A very good entry in the 33-1/3 series
By too_old_to_be_so_indie
I've read quite a few of the 33-1/3 series, and I think this is one of the best entries. It gives a great insight into the making of the album and also positions its creation within the greater musical trends of the time. My one disappointment is that the book presupposes the instance of a single "Bristol Scene" that existed around the time of this album; but the city is also important as home of two other scenes -- that of iconic indie label Sarah Records, and the more experimental sounds of the loose collective of musicians that included Flying Saucer Attack, The Third Eye Foundation, Crescent, Amp, Movietone, and others.

One of the Best Equine Reference Texts in Print
By T. Bremner
Great text book for anyone wanting an indepth understanding of examinations for, anatomy/clinical signs of, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of lameness in the sport horse. Text is written at a graduate level and assumes readers are vets in their final years of study/graduates OR the reader has an indepth understanding of equine anatomy, locomotion, pathology and surgery. Book covers chapters with up to date info on alternative therapies including shockwave, laser, acupuncture, chiropractic, herbal and massage treatment as well as traditional medicine.

Indepth chapters are provided on diagnostic imaging (including ultrasound, xray, nuclear, CT, MRI) Gait analysis/software, arthroscopic surgery and thermography. Lameness examination is covered in detail including nerve block application, conformation, palpation, manipulation, neurological conditions, unexplained lameness, acute lameness and swollen limbs. Corrective shoeing is covered in some depth as well as various shoe types on the market, natural balance shoeing and barefoot trimming.

The lameness/conditions are split into easy to reference sections (Foot, hindlimb, forelimb, axial skeleton) and separate chapters are offered covering development of orthopedic lameness/disease, arthritis and soft tissue injury. The latest recommendations for surgery are also covered in each chapter. It also covers lameness/conditions most commonly treated/presented in the horse relating specifically to its sport. This section takes up approx one fifth of the entire book. Racing is covered in detail for both European and American thoroughbreds and European/American/Australasian Standardbreds including hunt, steeple, timber and point to point racing. There is also a section on cold blooded trotters, racing quarter horses and arabs. The western disciplines are all included in details for each specific event/sport. Gaited breeds are also covered as well as endurance, driving, specific show breeds, ponies, jumping, eventing, dressage, breeding horses, foals and even pleasure horses get a mention.

The CD ROM contains footage of lameness examinations under saddle and inhand both on circles and straight lines on both hard and soft surfaces. Horses used in this CD are mostly performance horses used for jumping and dressage exhibiting various degrees of lameness in the forelimbs, hind limbs, the axial skeleton or a combination of these. There is a commentary for each video including the patient's history, response to any analgesic blocks performed and a diagnosis is then given if known. There are CD icons throughout the book allowing you to easily cross reference to segments of the CD

Destined to be a Classic
By A Customer
This text is destined to replace "Adams Lameness in the Horse" as the classic text for musculoskeletal disease in the horse. It is well laid out with chapters on diseases of specific anatomical areas, chapters on traditional and non-traditional diagnostic modalities and therapies ,followed by chapters on lameness issues related to specific disciplines. The combination of academic scholars and experienced practioners as authors adds an extra dimension to this tome.

good book, companion web site???
By N. K. Diehl
I have the 2d ed. for Kindle. I would give the book a very high review for the content itself, having long used Adams Lameness. I had to jump through some hoops with Elsevier customer service trying to get a PIN to be able to access the companion web site for the associated videos. [ultimately tech support solved the problem - try to get to them] One reason I chose this book was for the value of the videos along with the text. The publisher apparently did not think this through before creating an ebook.
