Good tips

I haven't gone completely through this book yet, but I have high hopes for it. What I have read so far seems solid.
It seems to be written more in an anecdotal form rather than written in a lecture or "classroom" style.
I found the "stories" helpful and thought-provoking.

A Great Resource

AMC's Guide to Outdoor Leadership is a clear, concise, and very useful resource for those who want to improve their outdoor leadership skills. This is a very practical guide: theorectical points are always illustrated with real-life examples. It has helped me to better understand my role and responsibilites as a trip leader, and shown me ways to improve my skills. I highly recommend it for volunteers and professionals alike.

One of the best in this field

There are a number of standard Outdoor Leadership Books. The focus of each frankly is similar with the basic concept explained... technical/practical skills, interpersonal skills and leadership skills. But that is where they change as to how this is presented. The original AMC Outdoor Leadership was one of the first in this area that was also readable. The is update continues in that tradition.

Nit picking....and this really applies to all of the books in this niche. They all need to consider the development of a "syllabus" of chapters or even a set of books where the study and ownership of the series completes your "education" in Outdoor Leadership. The other issue is more practical...not every one has the interpersonal skills or feel for people that is needed to be an effective outdoor leader.

The last issue is Judgement... and I don't know how to teach judgement other than providing "lots" of experiences that build on each other that in the end provide a person with the context for good judgement. And then the application of that judgement within some higher level ethical context. The AMC Outdoor Leadership provides this ethical context.

Seriously twisted but I loved it!!!

This may be one of the most erotic stories I've ever read. I loved how the story started, and just when I thought I had a handle on the torture taking place, the story shifted...and then shifted again. And I loved it. I love reading erotic horror and this new author did not disappoint. I will definitely be checking out M.J. Ferguson's other stories and eagerly awaiting the sequel to Depravity. If you like Edward Lee and Matt Shaw, I highly recommend this one!

Dark, Twisted and Kinky, Oh My!

4.5 stars - Wow, this one threw me for a bit of a loop. This twisted little tale starts off with Master/Slave that seems to be a bit non/con, but we quickly find that isn’t the case.

This is being told in the voice of the Slave, so that helps to really get his perspective on what’s happening and his real feelings about things. Even though the actions and behavior of the Master seem pretty awful, the Slave ensures us that he actually loves everything his Master does. So, you think that’s pretty much what the story is about, until wham! there is a total twist that actually had my head spinning in an attempt at understanding what was really taking place. The feeling of mental unstableness which had been looming in the back of my mind just skyrocketed. But this isn’t even the half of it. No, there is another twist that left me cringing.

I won’t give it away, but once again, the Slave tells us a story about how he came to learn about Master’s other “kink.” Let me say that it takes quite a bit to make me squeamish, but I almost didn’t make it through this part. It is pretty gory and things are more than a little effed up.

Enough about the content. Ms. Ferguson’s first debut story packs quite the punch in very few pages. The writing is smooth and the images almost too clear. It felt as though I was watching the scenes play out, as opposed to reading them. If you love horror or kink, or kinky horror, this is a fabulous example. I am almost too afraid to see where this is going to go next, but even though I might need to read with my eyes covered at some points, like a fender bender on the highway, I doubt I’ll be able to pass it by without looking.

Wow...was not expecting that. With that said, however, I love books that challenge my imagination and I love books that are able to catch me off guard, and this one did...on every element. This is about a master and his slave and their kinks. At first, I was torn because the master does some pretty harsh things to his slave. Thankfully, the author tells the story thru the slave and you realize quickly that the slave loves everything his master subjects him too. AND...then...wow...I love the twist and actually kinda whooped at the author's creativity.
But, the author has another surprise in store and I will have to say that it not only took me off guard but also pushed the boundaries of my limits. I love my dark reads, I love learning new aspects of D/s relationships, and I love being pushed to my own limits and MJ Ferguson accomplished all of that in this very short read.
This is a dark story so be prepared if you decide to take the chance. I was reading the end with one eye open and one eye closed because I needed to see where the author was going, but a little afraid also. It's hard to say that I loved this story, considering the content, but I definitely loved the power play dynamic and I admire the author for going somewhere most would not.
There will be a book 2 coming out and I know I will read it because the author has poked my curiosity. The book is short but the author was able to cover a lot of territory and she definitely gets your attention in the first few sentences. The story is well-written​, and the plot is...well, you should just read for yourself. I'm pretty sure you will be surprised by what you find.

Similar to Macaulay's Cathederal but for Adults

Like countless numbers of young people, I first became interested in the construction of cathedrals through David Macaulay's iconic children's book "Cathedral". His beautifully detailed illustrations brought medieval construction techniques to life. As an adult, I still love Macaulay's work but as a children's book, it can only carry you so far. Malcolm Hislop's "How to Buid a Cathedral" takes medieval construction to a much higher level. Hislop uses scores of richly detailed illustrations to explain the building technologies of the Middle Ages. In preparing this book, Hislop was able to draw upon beautifully detailed line drawings from Nineteenth Century sources. The other great virture of this book is that Hislop writes for the general public. This is a great book that is reasonably priced. Highly recommended!

This is the book I had been looking for since I saw it in a local book store, but unfortunately, did not purchase at the time. It gives very "in depth" descriptions of the design, layout and construction techniques at the time. The illustrations are fantastic in their detail and the description of the subject. I am amazed at how much detail was carved into the stone and can understand why it took generations to complete the construction. I highly recommend this book for anyone who who has an interest in the design and construction techniques of the period.

I fondly remember haunting my favorite bookstore as a college student in the early 1990s, ogling the big, full-color astronomy texts, when I happened upon The Backyard Astronomer's Guide. It wasn't as flashy as the other books, but I was quickly taken by its practical information, covering all the subjects I was interested in as a fledgling amateur. Now in its third edition, Terence Dickinson and Alan Dyer have completely rewritten large sections to keep in lockstep with the evolving trends. Like an old friend who has grown wiser over time, this compendium has become better with age. It's good-looking too--though chock-full of useful information, none of the full-color layouts appear cramped or confused. Immediately from the first chapter the authors' fluid writing style draws you in, casually introducing you to the pursuit of the night sky. As in previous editions, the flow comfortably builds with each page, easing you into progressively challenging subjects without missing a step.
The text builds though each successive chapter, describing today's plethora of binoculars, telescopes, mounts, eyepieces, and other accessories. We then move on to delve deeply into everything of interest in the sky, from the planets to deep-sky objects. The detailed yet accessible explanation of celestial mechanics should be required reading for everyone. The third part introduces digital astrophotography. Yes, digital--it starts out by stating that film is dead. This new section covers everything you need to get started taking pictures, including some useful parts of Adobe Photoshop. The Backyard Astronomer's Guide closes with a set of beautifully rendered charts of the Milky Way by Glenn LeDrew. Opposing pages display a color version and a labeled, black-on-white version plotted to magnitude 9. Dickinson and Dyer have brought their excellent guide further into the 21st century. About the Author

Terence Dickinson is the author of Night Watch and 13 other astronomy books, among them The Universe and Beyond, Summer Stargazing and Exploring the Night Sky. He is also editor of SkyNews.

Alan Dyer is program producer at the Calgary Science Centre Planetarium and a contributing editor to Sky and Telescope magazine. An authority on commercial telescopes, his reviews of astronomical equipment appear regularly in major astronomy magazines.

Introduction
Since the publication of the first edition of The Backyard Astronomer's Guide in 1991, amateur astronomy has evolved in several important areas. This prompted a major rewrite and redesign for the Second Edition in 2002. Even more rapid developments since then bring us to this Third Edition and another major overhaul, which now expands the book substantially beyond its original 295 pages.
As always, new developments in equipment are behind most of the revisions led by affordable computerized telescopes and the entry of China as a major player in telescope manufacture. More unexpected was the speed of the digital-camera revolution, which opened a new wonderland of astrophotographic opportunities undreamed of in the days of film. That, combined with a wider array of telescopes and accessories at better prices than ever before, meant that every chapter required revisions, ranging up to a complete rewrite of the astrophotography section, Chapter 13.
In response to readers' requests for how-to reference guides to fundamental telescope setup, use and maintenance procedures, we've added two new chapters (14 and 15). More than 200 new photos and illustrations accompany these changes, both major and minor, in every chapter. (Prices given are average U.S. dollar dealer prices.)
To keep the text uncluttered and readable, we have avoided embedding a lot of website addresses throughout. To locate the websites for companies and products described, simply Google the names. Finally, at the back of the book, we've added a beautiful and practical Milky Way atlas, created by Glenn LeDrew.
In almost all cases, we have used photographs of equipment that were taken in the field and in our own studios rather than relying on stock shots from manufacturers. (We've really used this equipment!)
In many respects, this book is a sequel to coauthor Dickinson's NightWatch: A Guide to Viewing the Universe, which emphasizes reference material for the absolute beginner. In The Backyard Astronomer's Guide, we provide more in-depth commentary, guidance and resources for the enthusiast.

An interesting book to learn from with a bonus of amazing pictures.

I bought this for my 16 year old grandson. He is in 11th grade & is interested in this topic. He really liked the book. I got it because after reviewing other books it seemed to have good information that was easy to understand, accompanied with really awesome pictures. Other books I looked at were too technical without being fun to read & in fact were very boring in the way they were written. The great pictures help a lot versus those that were just to technical. To capture a beginners attention I believe this is the book. It's for experienced people too but I'm not able to speak on that topic. From a beginners point of view, this book is well organized, attention getting and makes learning interesting & even fun.

I have been recommending this book for decades as the best beginners book for astronomers on the market. I was the leader of the Novice group in the Saguaro Astronomy Club in Phoenix for many years and many folks bought this book under my recommendation. There is all you need to know to get started viewing, imaging and enjoying the night sky. Lot of useful info and explained very well.

Unbelievably great astronomy book...

Being new to backyard Astronomy, I was a little hesitant to spend the money on this book, as it seemed to be a little expensive. I read a few of the reviews and decided to take the plunge. Now that this book is in my hands, you would have quite a challenge prying it away from me. The authors, Dickenson and Dyer have covered EVERYTHING that I could think of, and then some. The chapter on eyepieces alone was worth the cost of the book, and I made two purchases based upon this info alone. I'm glad I did. They eyepieces that I purchased as a result have really increased the quality of my viewing.

The photos are beautiful and most are taken by the authors. The Milky Way, Galaxies, Nebulas, Constellations, Planets are all in this book along with how best to enjoy or photograph them.

Also not really easy to tell online is the size of this book. It is a glossy, coffee table quality book with all of the technical info that I was looking for, and then some. After scanning and reading the sections of greatest interest, I am now going back through and reading each chapter in full. I never do that in this type of book, but this one is too good to miss anything.

After having this book for a couple of months, I can honestly say that it is one of my most prized astronomy possessions. I cannot think of any case where I got so much really useful information about a subject that I love for so little money. This is an indispensable guide for any backyard astronomer.

Outstanding Machinery Alignment Book

There are very few books about machinery alignment. This is the best I have encountered for machinery alignment. The tried and true methods and techniques discussed in this book are what is used in the industry for large rotating equipment.

An added bonus of this book is the detailed history of rotating equipment and related alignment methods.

Rotating equipment engineers should consider having this book in your personal library.

Definitive Text for Shaft Alignment Work

Quite simply, this is the definitive text for shaft alignment work. If you do any type of machinery alignment, you need a copy of this book. Just about every situation is covered in this text. The author does seem to have a bias against "laser" alignment devices, but other than this, there is little to fault in this book. Highly recommended.
