I didn't like that this book was infused with quite a bit ...

While I appreciate the massage and the bottom line, I didn't like that this book was infused with quite a bit of judgement. While standing up for his beliefs, he ended up shaking the finger at those who belong to the opposing political party and/or prefer to practice traditional Christianity. I think the beauty in Progressive Christianity is that you embrace of everyone, regardless of their beliefs and how they interpret or do things.

An excellent discussion of Progresssice Faith

Many American Christians think the Name Progressive Christianity is an oxymoron. They equate faith with rigid certainty and a marriage to the political ideals of the religious right. Jarrod does a great job, in simple language of showing that Progressive Christians approach scripture with honor, and all people with the Love of Jesus Christ. This is an excellent book to give Progressive Christians support in their life of faith. It is also a great book for conservative Christians to realize that contrary to some voices out there, progressive Christians are brothers and sisters in Christ. This book goes a long way to helping everyone understand what Progressive Christianity is about and the love that motivates these Christians. Progressive Christians, as seen in this book, are not seeking to undermine scripture, they are seeking to fully live out the principles they see in its pages. Often the debate between Conservatives and Progressives is over confessions of faith. This book should help all of us see that living an authentic faith, following the teaching of Jesus Christ is a bridge from the church to the rest of the world. So whether you are a progressive Christians seeking to strengthen your faith, a conservative Christians seeking to understand your brothers and sisters in Christ, or someone trying to understand how to move forward in your own Christian life, I recommend Jarrod's book wholeheartedly.

I am a Christian pastor an writer who believes in the inspiration of scripture, The Trinity, the incarnation and deity of Christ, the inspiration of Paul, special creation, and the ongoing work of the holy Spirit, I hold to pretty much complete Nicene Christianity, yet I also believe that the love of Christ compels me to act out of love toward those in need, divorce myself from political ideologies, and work toward unity with all men. I am a libertarian who find the actions of both political parties abhorrent and believe Christians need to be a prophetic voice against politics, not a driving force behind it. Jarrod's book is one a would recommend to my theological conservative allies as well as my socially liberal co-workers in the faith. It is an easy read, not a large academic treatise on the subject, but opens a space to understand Christians with a Progressive Faith.

excellent introduction to the Progressive Christian movement

through personal experiences, biblical study, and analysis of current events, Rev. Cochran takes readers along as he discovers and embraces the ideals of Progressive Christianity. In my opinion it is a great intro to the movement, and it is endorsed by many of the movements well known leaders like Bart Campolo. If you are one of those people who has been 'left out' by traditional Christianity, perhaps this book can introduce you to a new group of Christians who feel the same way you do.

About the Author

Edith Wharton (1862-1937), American novelist and short-story writer, was born in New York City. Strongly influenced by Henry James, she is best known for her subtle and su-perbly crafted studies of the tragedies and ironies in the lives of members of middle-class and artistocratic New York soci-ety in the the nineteenth century. She was educated in New York and Europe, and married Edward Wharton, a Boston banker, in 1885. When her husband became mentally ill, she cared for him until 1913, when she settled permanently in France and divorced him. Among her best and most characteristic works are The House of Mirth (1905) and The Age of Innocence (1920), for which she received a Pultizer prize.

Not your average Wharton novel, but well worth reading!

I'm not sure why two positive reviews, including one that appears to be a piece of advertising for something called "Republica Publishing," show up with no stars. At any rate, this is one of Wharton's most interesting novels, although it doesn't have the symmetrical structure of THE HOUSE OF MIRTH and THE AGE OF INNOCENCE. If you're interested in a different work by Edith Wharton, one that involves industrialism, professions for women, euthanasia, divorce, and a host of interesting events, try THE FRUIT OF THE TREE.

Justine is a very appealing character

I thoroughly enjoyed this excellent novel. Wharton has created two flawed yet admirable characters - the young doctor Amherst and the virtuous nurse Justine. It wrung my heart out. But then all Wharton's novels do that to me. She is such an excellent writer that she brings you into her world more effectively than a movie. Her books are all very difficult to lay aside and stay with you long after reading them. I downloaded her complete works onto my Kindle for 99 cents! Never were pennies more effectively spent.

Unsuccessful experiment with a socko last section

I am on a Wharton rampage at the moment, tearing through less-known works that I had never even heard of until recently. As far as I know, this is the only one of her novels that deals head-on with industrial labor-management problems. It concerns a factory in a depressing small town: the oppressive conditions of its workers, the unjust wealth and ease it creates for its owners and their hanger-ons, and what happens when a determined reformer sets out to change the way the factory is run. Wharton portrays these issues through the story of the reformer's troubled relationships with two women, the rich young widow who owns the mills and a nurse, a childhood friend of the widow's who must now earn her way in the world. The nurse is the novel's real protagonist.

Unlike other writers who tackle class conflicts, e.g., Balzac or Eliot, Wharton makes the sketchiest possible effort to depict the workers themselves. She sticks to the milieu she knows, the world of upper-class drawing rooms, although as usual she reveals them to be full of secret social and economic tensions. Unfortunately, Wharton's distance from her chosen subject-matter--we are not even told what the factory and mills produce (some kind of cloth, apparently, as there is talk of carding-machines)--distances the reader from it as well. We learn much more about the thwarted desires of the do-gooder than about the desires of the human beings whom he proposes to help. As a result, both his motives and his plans are rather suspect in a way that I am not sure Wharton intended. The novel itself becomes abstract and dull and the characters don't come to life. I found myself feeling sympathetic toward those who resist the reformer, especially his first wife (the widow), whom he expects to hand him her mills and money to manage, to reduce her lifestyle, to rent out one of her properties, etc.

The marriage fails almost as soon as it begins along with the reformer's plans. Wharton then has to devise a way for the reformer to achieve his goals while also finding him a more suitable helpmeet. Wharton does not like divorce, so the wife must die. This plot requirement leads to the only really interesting part of the book. Previous reviewers have already explained how Wharton pulls the plot off. I will just add that the last part of the book unexpectedly rises nearly to the level of Wharton's great novels as we follow the twists and turns of the heroine's moral life as she slowly, agonizingly comes to terms with the repercussions of a well-intentioned but unlawful act of mercy. But the reformer, now her husband, finally achieves his dreams without having to undergo a comparable moral awakening. The book ends, like so many Wharton novels, on a chilling note of female suffering and injustice. Read it for the last section.

Excellent

This book is not easy reading but if you want an insight into indigenous medicine it is excellent. It raises the difficult question of how to disentangle the colonial influence and at the end one is left with the question, can socities which have been colonised ever get back to the full flowering of their culture.

About the Author

About the Author
Theresa L. White is a professor of Psychology at Le Moyne College and an adjunct associate professor in Neuroscience and Physiology at SUNY Upstate Medical University. She received her undergraduate degree in psychology from Boise State University. Both of her higher degrees in experimental psychology are from English universities; her Masters of Science degree is from Oxford University (New College) and her PhD is from the University of Warwick. Dr. White's research is concerned with cognitive aspects of olfaction, or the way that people think about smells and flavors. She currently teaches Research Methods, Sensation and Perception, and Brain and Behavior. Dr. White lives in Syracuse, New York, where winters sometimes bring more than 180 inches of snow. When the lakes are frozen, Dr. White fills her time with travel and by singing in a gospel choir. Once the water will allow it, she enjoys racing her Hobie 16 sailboat.

The course required this book and so far its a decent read. Good questions at the end of the chapter to test you on the contents and it included a summary page with bullet points of the main ideas of the chapters.

Thorough and carefully thought out addition to your library of jewelry textbooks

This is a new book by second time author Anastasia Young. Her website is located here: [...] . Her first book, Jewelry Techniques: The Essential Guide to Choosing and Using Materials, Stones and Settings, was a well received reference source.

The Workbench Guide is a high quality hardcover, 320 page text which a reader might like to consider adding to his or her permanent library of "how to" books. Packed with 400 photographs, 200 illustrations and 100 charts, it doesn't allow your mind to wander for a second as it guides you step by step through the five sections it is divided into. Whether purchased by a serious student of jewelry design and technique, or just by a passionate lover of jewelry who privately, safely teaches herself as much as she can, there is valuable knowledge to be found in this book.

I am not a believer of choosing one book as the "be all and end all" for any process of learning. I am well aware that there are fine books in existence already [ here are a few, for example ,

A few months ago I purchased Complete Metalsmith: Professional Edition by Tim McCreight. As much as I love his book, I love this one even more.

This is a beautiful book with gorgeous photographs and a wealth of information. I've been a Silversmith for about 15 years and even I learned some new tricks and techniques.

This book, along with Tim McCreight's Complete Metalsmith is a must have for any metalsmith's library. But if I had to choose between one or the other, this is the one I would choose.

I'm a huge "How To Book" reader and most How To books fall short of what I'd like to see in them, but this one actually surprised me by giving me more than I expected.

Great step by step photos

This book has great step by step photos of jewelry making techniques. Could almost be used as a substitute to taking a silver jewelry making class. I'm still digesting this book, but it was worth the money. Certainly good for a beginner.
