Moneyball, by Michael Lewis

“You need know absolutely nothing about baseball to appreciate the wit, snap, economy . . . and incisiveness of [Moneyball]. Lewis has hit another one out of the park.” ―Janet Maslin, New York Times

Billy Beane, the Oakland A’s general manager, is leading a revolution. Reinventing his team on a budget, he needs to outsmart the richer teams. He signs undervalued players whom the scouts consider flawed but who have a knack for getting on base, scoring runs, and winning games. Moneyball is a quest for the secret of success in baseball and a tale of the search for new baseball knowledge―insights that will give the little guy who is willing to discard old wisdom the edge over big money.

Amazon.com Review
Billy Beane, general manager of MLB's Oakland A's and protagonist of Michael Lewis's Moneyball, had a problem: how to win in the Major Leagues with a budget that's smaller than that of nearly every other team. Conventional wisdom long held that big name, highly athletic hitters and young pitchers with rocket arms were the ticket to success. But Beane and his staff, buoyed by massive amounts of carefully interpreted statistical data, believed that wins could be had by more affordable methods such as hitters with high on-base percentage and pitchers who get lots of ground outs. Given this information and a tight budget, Beane defied tradition and his own scouting department to build winning teams of young affordable players and inexpensive castoff veterans.

Lewis was in the room with the A's top management as they spent the summer of 2002 adding and subtracting players and he provides outstanding play-by-play. In the June player draft, Beane acquired nearly every prospect he coveted (few of whom were coveted by other teams) and at the July trading deadline he engaged in a tense battle of nerves to acquire a lefty reliever. Besides being one of the most insider accounts ever written about baseball, Moneyball is populated with fascinating characters. We meet Jeremy Brown, an overweight college catcher who most teams project to be a 15th round draft pick (Beane takes him in the first). Sidearm pitcher Chad Bradford is plucked from the White Sox triple-A club to be a key set-up man and catcher Scott Hatteberg is rebuilt as a first baseman. But the most interesting character is Beane himself. A speedy athletic can't-miss prospect who somehow missed, Beane reinvents himself as a front-office guru, relying on players completely unlike, say, Billy Beane. Lewis, one of the top nonfiction writers of his era (Liar's Poker, The New New Thing), offers highly accessible explanations of baseball stats and his roadmap of Beane's economic approach makes Moneyball an appealing reading experience for business people and sports fans alike. --John Moe

From Publishers Weekly
Lewis (Liar's Poker; The New New Thing) examines how in 2002 the Oakland Athletics achieved a spectacular winning record while having the smallest player payroll of any major league baseball team. Given the heavily publicized salaries of players for teams like the Boston Red Sox or New York Yankees, baseball insiders and fans assume that the biggest talents deserve and get the biggest salaries. However, argues Lewis, little-known numbers and statistics matter more. Lewis discusses Bill James and his annual stats newsletter, Baseball Abstract, along with other mathematical analysis of the game. Surprisingly, though, most managers have not paid attention to this research, except for Billy Beane, general manager of the A's and a former player; according to Lewis, "[B]y the beginning of the 2002 season, the Oakland A's, by winning so much with so little, had become something of an embarrassment to Bud Selig and, by extension, Major League Baseball." The team's success is actually a shrewd combination of luck, careful player choices and Beane's first-rate negotiating skills. Beane knows which players are likely to be traded by other teams, and he manages to involve himself even when the trade is unconnected to the A's. " `Trawling' is what he called this activity," writes Lewis. "His constant chatter was a way of keeping tabs on the body of information critical to his trading success." Lewis chronicles Beane's life, focusing on his uncanny ability to find and sign the right players. His descriptive writing allows Beane and the others in the lively cast of baseball characters to come alive.

From The New Yorker
The Oakland Athletics have reached the post-season playoffs three years in a row, even though they spend just one dollar for every three that the New York Yankees spend. Their secret, as Lewis's lively account demonstrates, is not on the field but in the front office, in the shape of the general manager, Billy Beane. Unable to afford the star hires of his big-spending rivals, Beane disdains the received wisdom about what makes a player valuable, and has a passion for neglected statistics that reveal how runs are really scored. Beane's ideas are beginning to attract disciples, most notably at the Boston Red Sox, who nearly lured him away from Oakland over the winter. At the last moment, Beane's loyalty got the better of him; besides, moving to a team with a much larger payroll would have diminished the challenge.

Brilliant book about a baseball revolution
By D. G. Devin
Read this book only if you are prepared to realize that much of what you thought you knew about baseball is nonsense. This book is an amazing eye-opener about a then radical new way of managing a pro baseball team that allowed the dirt-poor Oakland A's to win as many games as the fat-cat NY Yankees. Using detailed statistical analysis created by baseball fans like Bill James who wanted to know how to make better teams in their fantasy baseball leagues, Oakland GM Billy Beane drafted or traded for players other teams considered sub-standard or worn-out and Oakland became a post-season threat despite having the second lowest payroll in the major leagues. Although the baseball establishment reacted with horror and contempt to having its time-honored methods of choosing players challenged, the approach used in Moneyball has been widely adopted by many teams including the Boston Red Sox who won the World Series shortly after doing so. Since reading this book I laugh every time I hear an announcer use the phrase, "productive out", knowing that over the long haul it's teams that don't trade outs for bases that win more games. The Moneyball approach remains controversial with many fans and baseball industry insiders--it's more fun to watch someone bunt a runner to second than it is to watch that hitter draw a walk--but the numbers show that over time the walks are more valuable to a team. Regardless of how much you agree with Bill James and Billy Beane, this is a terrific book that will make you really think about how the game of baseball works.

I don't like baseball. Let's put that out there
By J.H.
I don't like baseball. Let's put that out there. This book helped me outline exactly what it is that I don't like about baseball, and how to explain that to the baseball fanatics I'm surrounded by. It's well written and an interesting take on 'america's game'. It had me considering some of the reasons why I don't enjoy baseball and led me to do further research on the game.

Good book.

What are the lessons?
By Hamilton Beck
As someone who scans the headlines but does not otherwise follow baseball, I was hoping to learn lessons from this book that could be applied to sports in general, or at least football and soccer. Let me say first off that while there may be such lessons (though fewer for leagues with a salary cap, like the NFL), one thing I quickly discovered is that there sure are a lot of baseball players I never heard of.

So, what are the sports lessons? On the one hand, Moneyball is about statistics, the key insight being the importance of “inefficiencies in the system.” To a large degree this means determining which stats are the key to winning and – here’s a point that does not get emphasized enough – putting a dollar value on them. The implication is that a player’s total value can be calculated by figuring out the dollar amount you can assign to each of his individual skills. Then see which players on your team are overvalued, sell them and replace them with unknowns who are undervalued by the market but can perform just as well at lower cost. Billy Beane phrases it this way (he’s talking about replacing a player): “The important thing is not to recreate the individual. The important thing is to recreate the aggregate.” Because in Beane’s eyes that’s all a player is: an aggregation of skills. When in the course of time these younger players start to demand big bucks, they too are let go. It’s all about winning on a shoestring. Which makes sense if you’re managing a low-budget outfit like the Oakland A’s.

What’s the downside? Evaluating players by stats alone may be efficient, but it’s also ruthless. It exposes management’s eternal mantra that “we’re all a family” as mostly claptrap. It leaves little room for rewarding loyalty. Whether we’re talking about baseball, football, soccer or basketball – the point is that these are all team sports, obviously. And that means there are certain intangibles such as team spirit and leadership which cannot be quantified. Think of the franchise players on your favorite team – would you trade them virtually at the drop of a hat if you could find a couple of no-names who, according to a spreadsheet, had the potential to produce just as well? Well, you would if you really believed, like Beane does, that there’s nothing you can’t put a dollar figure on. Followed to its logical conclusion, you might end up having less a cohesive team than a bunch of misfit toys. It’s no accident that Moneyball lacks a chapter on team chemistry.

On the other hand, this book is not just about baseball stats – a subject which would not automatically appeal to a wider audience. You’ve got to have some human interest. Where does Michael Lewis find it? Aside from Beane and some members of his staff, he discovers it in the stories of those who benefit from the system: the unsung players, diamonds in the rough who don’t look like marquee players or even think of themselves as being very good. Players nobody else wants, who are taken on board and turned into winners. The chief joy of Moneyball comes from reading about these underdogs.

But if they are the winners, who are the losers in this system? I missed the stories about those who, either through talent or hard work or both, have risen to the top and can command high salaries, only to find themselves traded for no other reason than “inefficiency in the system.” We’re not necessarily talking about players who have stopped producing either. Where are Lewis’s tales about the shock of being a star one week and finding yourself on the trading block the next? No heart-warming human interest there – to Lewis (and Beane), those guys are like overpriced stocks, to be unloaded before their value starts to decline. No matter how much these players have contributed to the team, or how much we fans have come to like them, no matter if they are still performing at a high level, evidently once they get that oversized paycheck, it’s time to start thinking of how best to cut them loose. The movie is actually much better about this aspect than the book. It goes a long way towards humanizing Beane, who appears somewhat callous in the book, by showing that he acknowledges this fact and tries to rationalize it – “They’re professionals,” Brad Pitt says, “they can handle it.”

Many reviewers praise Moneyball for the business lessons it contains. Of course there are useful tips such as – “don’t accept something just because that’s the way we’ve always done it,” and “it pays to think outside the box,” and “dare to be different” – all commendable. At the same time, it should be kept in mind that the advice given in Moneyball pertains best to organizations like the Oakland A’s: undercapitalized firms that are forced to compete with the big boys. The book shows you how to punch above your weight for a while – but is not a formula for on-going success. As Beane himself puts it, “When you have no money you can’t afford long-term solutions, only short-term ones.” He didn’t manage his team this way because he liked to, but because, given his budget constraints, he had little choice. I worry that the chief lesson CEO’s will take away is: In the name of rationality, it’s okay to treat your employees as though they were members of your fantasy team. The movie makes it explicit that this is one reason Beane does not like to watch his team play – if he did, he might form an emotional attachment to some players he’s inevitably going to trade away. The other reason being: superstition – his presence might jinx the team.

Keep in mind, too, that this book was written long before the Great Recession, when CEO’s were not as obsessed with cutting costs as they are today – and for most companies, labor is the top expense. It’s perhaps not entirely coincidental that one of Moneyball’s gurus, Paul DePodesta, has joined the board of Sears, according to Bloomberg Businessweek (July 11, 2013 – the whole article, by Mina Kimes, is well worth reading.). Eddie Lampert, Sears’ chairman and an Ayn Rand acolyte, “wanted to use nontraditional metrics to gain an edge, like DePodesta did for the Oakland Athletics in Moneyball and is trying to repeat in his current job with the New York Mets. Only so far, Lampert’s experiment resembles a different book: The Hunger Games.” How so? The company is now “ravaged by infighting as its divisions battle over fewer resources.” Talk about learning the wrong lessons.
But that’s not the fault of Michael Lewis. I give the book four stars for being thought-provoking.

By the way, Moneyball is soon going to appear in Russian translation. I don’t envy the person tasked with writing explanations of technical terms for an audience that for the most part has probably never seen so much as a single inning of baseball. It’s been years since the sports channels have broadcast an MLB game with commentary in Russian. The movie was released here under the title, “The Man Who Changed Everything.”

Finally, here’s a stat that’s pretty amazing for a book that first came out about a decade ago – almost 30% of the reviews on this site were written in the past twelve months!

Excellent, Exciting, Couldn't put it down!
By Preston Pratt
Although I have an extensive library of Datsun Z Car related books in hard cover and paper back, I found this book extremely enjoyable. Even though, Brian Long is a British writer, often if not permanently living in Japan, he provides a worldwide perspective that is often missing in most books about the Datsun Z Car. He seems a master at uncovering facts in the history of the Datsun and the Z Car previously known to only a very few Datsun insiders. Within its cover, there are great pictorial representations of Datsun cars, many not seen often. It is an excellent write up about the Datsun car history, the early Datsun Z car as it progressed to the touring GT becoming the 280ZX and first generation 300ZX ('84-'89), to the Super Car it became in the 1990's with the 300ZX Twin Turbo. The author outlines the racing efforts of some well known drivers with some great photos. Some advertising photos of the period are also captured within the pages of this marvelous book. I have had and continue to have a love affair with the Datsun Z Car, as I have owned over 200 of the early 240Z's, but Brian Long's Book on the 280ZX to the 300ZX, gave me a greater appreciation for the car and the history behind it. It was thoroughly enjoyable reading, and a welcome addition to my collection of Datsun Z Car books. I couldn't stop reading it to the end. Whenever possible I spend some time reviewing the chapters on racing and design work history, over and over again. I never get tired of it. This book and his companion book entitled, 'Datsun Z, From Fairlady to 280Z', are probably the only two Datsun Z Car books a person really needs, although there are several other good ones. But it is of course, nice to own them all.

Datsun 280ZX, Nissan 300ZX
By Anthony J. Nip
This book is a "must have" for enthusiasts of the legendary Datsun / Nissan Z-car. Brian Long does a good job describing the continuing story of the original Datsun Z-car, as it evolved from a sportscar into a GT and finally into a supercar. The book starts with a recap of the history of Datsun / Nissan and the original 240Z, 260Z, 280Z series, which Long covered in his earlier work - Datsun Z.
As the title suggests, this book picks up on the Z-car story with in-depth coverage of the 280ZX (the second generation Z-car) and both generations of the 300ZX, including the 1990s Twin Turbo supercar which the Z-car finally evolved into. Long also describes the various versions of the 280ZX and 300ZX which Datsun / Nissan sold in different part of the world. This gives the reader a more comprehensive picture and a real global understanding of the Z-car. Long's book is wonderful reading, and the text is supplemented with excellent photographs and illustrations, including pictures of Nissan's original marketing materials for the 280 and 300ZX.
If you are a fan of the Z-car, if you are a member of a Z-club, if you own a Z-car, then this book definitely belongs in your bookcase.

The definitive 280/300ZX guide
By John B
This book has pride of place on my bedside table at the moment. Patiently waiting on the real thing (a 1990 Twin Turbo 300ZX to ship from Japan). It's the sort of book that an enthusiast can read and refer to time and time again.

Mine was a second hand copy but virtually new condition. Brian Long does an excellent job on the history of Nissan/Datsun. And for 280ZX and 300ZX owners lots of interesting photos, period advertisements and background info.

The Impossible: An Essay on Hyperintensionality, by Mark Jago

Mark Jago presents an original philosophical account of meaningful thought: in particular, how it is meaningful to think about things that are impossible. We think about impossible things all the time. We can think about alchemists trying to turn base metal to gold, and about unfortunate mathematicians trying to square the circle. We may ponder whether god exists; and philosophers frequently debate whether properties, numbers, sets, moral and aesthetic qualities, and qualia exist. In many philosophical or mathematical debates, when one side of the argument gets things wrong, it necessarily gets them wrong. As we consider both sides of one of these philosophical arguments, we will at some point think about something that's impossible. Yet most philosophical accounts of meaning and content hold that we can't meaningfully think or reason about the impossible.

In The Impossible, Jago argues that we often gain new information, new beliefs and, sometimes, fresh knowledge through logic, mathematics and philosophy. That is why logic, mathematics, and philosophy are useful. We therefore require accounts of knowledge and belief, of information and content, and of meaning which allow space for the impossible. Jago's aim in this book is to provide such accounts. He gives a detailed analysis of the concept of hyperintensionality, whereby logically equivalent contents may be distinct, and develops a theory in terms of possible and impossible worlds. Along the way, he provides a theory of what those worlds are and how they feature in our analysis of normative epistemic concepts: knowledge, belief, information, and content.

Review

"Jago's book will be a pleasure to read for a wide range of philosophers interested in mind, language, epistemology, and metaphysics. This book usefully contributes to both the philosophical and technical tasks of incorporating impossible worlds into our theorising about representation. It also lays important initial groundwork for employing impossible worlds in epistemology: not just to model what people do believe and how those beliefs change, but the rational constraints on doing so, even when the beliefs represent impossibilities." -- Mind

    A marvelous contribution
    By James E. Shotts MD
The Subtle Body is a truly outstanding 5 star book, and a masterpiece of publishing and easy readability. In my view, it is an essential book on the subject of subtle energy and health/disease. The book is subtitled An Encyclopedia Of Your Energy Anatomy, however it is that and MUCH MORE. The book is beautifully and clearly written; and subdivided into 6 parts containing 40 chapters each addressing essential fundamental information on energy structures and systems - (the fields, channels, and bodies) -- that underpin our physical bodies and physical reality. Additionally, this book explores means of accessing the tools and techniques used to energetically modify (heal) dis-ease and illness examining techniques used in ancient times as well as today's contemporary theories of subtle energy. The 10 pages of Notes allows for additional detailed reading on any area of special interest. The extensive bibliography alone is worth the price of the book. The many color illustrations are of the highest caliber and clarity; plus the publisher used high quality paper in the book imparting a wonderful feel to the reader.
On a personal note, I am a practicing physician with over 30 years experience as a specialist treating patients with pharmaceuticals and surgery. However, over the years I begin to wonder why some patients healed, and others with the same diagnosis and treatment did not heal. A quest for greater knowledge sparked a journey that ultimately lead me to discover Cyndi Dale and her work in healing. There are many books now in print on subtle energy, however, this book by Cyndi Dale is by far the most comprehensive, most researched, and best written book I have seen on the subject. In my view it is essential reading for anyone who desires to participate in the next revolution in medicine.

Overly Complicated & Not Very Well Tied Together
    By taaj
If you are looking for an encyclopedia of energy body, this might be for you. It does give you a ton of ideas about energy, but they are both introductory and difficult to understand much less apply. For example, it touches on quantum physics, string theory, and Traditional Chinese medicine. All of those are meaty topics that get a quick overview, but is it enough that you can understand? Probably not. Is the thread that ties them together a strong one? Definitely not.

I am not sure that the author really knows enough about the topics to try to explain them to others. I think that is a major failing of this book. The technical stuff is targeted to a broad, general public audience but it is still written like technical stuff. I didn't get a lot of it. I am sure others won't either. It's like talking about gravity. There is a lot of physics that you can talk about to explain what it is, why it does what it does and how it impacts life, but if you say, "What comes up must come down" we all get it. That's what I needed. That's not what I got.

The book also spends a lot of time developing ideas to lead you to a one line conclusion. That one line would get me all excited, but unfortunately that is all I got. And the jump to that conclusion was a leap that appears to be based on faulty logic. Since I am not given all the facts, it's hard to really tell.

What I got out of this book is a greater curiosity. It is a jumping off point to further explore things I was already interested in and look into things that I didn't really know a lot about.

If you are considering the kindle edition, skip it. The illustrations are very difficult to see.

I would still recommend this book as it is unique, but I would get a used copy or find it on sale. I think most people will get limited use from it.

    Energy flows where attention goes
    By Inkhorn
I have bought many different energy based books, and used different energy based techniques, with great results.

Quantum Touch taught me the importance of breath and how to move energy, and the principles of resonance and entrainment. EFT taught me how to release negative emotions within two minutes by tapping on specific energy points. Reiki taught me the importance of healing touch, and using Universal Life Force energy effortlessly.

Matrix Energetics taught me the importance of intention, and active imagination. I could go on, Qigong, Reiki, Touch of healing, Yoga, Tibetans, Huna..

Here we have a visually stunning book, with great diagrams throughout. It offers a complete energy system overview, and numerous diagrams, and chapters on anatomy, and the different medical systems. It's important to understand how energy correleates with anatomy, and this book does a great job of that.

It gives an overview of different practices. I particularly liked reading about shiatsu, which was discovered by a 7 year old Japanese boy who healed his mother of rheumatism, and I loved the explanation and diagrams of Reflexology. In addition, the description of chakras and how they work, and what each one means is displayed in a very easy to assimilate format. Visually compelling.

You can also learn about Reiki, Qigong, and many others.

In educating us on many different practices within one volume, we get the big picture, and so it is not a specialist book. For example, you will learn what EFT is but not the tapping routine. If you're like me, there are a couple of places where you might like more detail. If it had a bit more detail such as the tapping routine, I would definitely give it five stars.

If you wish to explore energy medicine more, I recommend:

The Energy Medicine Kit by Donna Eden, which shows energy testing being demonstrated, energy zipups and more advanced techniques, including a five minute daily routine to boost your energy.

Quantum-Touch: The Power to Heal (Third Edition) by Richard Gordon.

Life Energy: Using the Meridians to Unlock the Hidden Power of Your Emotions by John Diamond MD, one of the best books I have read on energy medicine, and a complete manual.

The Touch of Healing: Energizing the Body, Mind, and Spirit With Jin Shin Jyutsu by Alice Burmeister. It's Jin Shin Jitsu, a complete system, very easy to learn and use.

The EFT Manual (EFT: Emotional Freedom Techniques)by Gary Craig is a simple tapping process useful for letting go of troubling emotions. Imagine easily letting go of issues such as anger, anxiety, fear, forgiveness, stress, procrastination, traumas. [...], and buy various books on Amazon.

The Emotion Code by Bradley Nelson. Another complete system for releasing trapped emotions using magnets discovered by a chiropractor. A very well written book.

    I hope this was helpful.
