Excellent Reference and Guide

Received this book in very good used condition. It is an excellent guide to drawing. Contains alot of history and examples of artwork done by famous and not so famous artists. It is written in very clear and concise language making it easy to read as well as great for reference. Would recommend it to anyone interested in drawing at any skill level. It is one that I will use for years to come.

Horrible Quality

I agree with the previous review which explains the horrible quality of this textbook. While I am not evaluating the content, I must say I have used it three times and the binding has completely fallen apart. For such an expensive item, this is absolutely unacceptable. I am in the process of contacting Thomson Wadsworth to complain about the issue. I am also asking my instructor to adopt another textbook and to file a complaint with the publisher. I tried to find a hardback copy of this item but could not. If you need to have a sturdy, solid textbook this is NOT for you. I am completely disgusted.

**UPDATE**
After using the textbook for a week, I must say that overall the content of the text is outstanding. As a beginning art student, the text is very accessible and logically arranged. The illustrations are helpful, although almost all are just black and white, and the important terms and concepts are easily noted. However, the binding has COMPLETELY fallen apart; several of my classmates have complained of this as well. Shame on the publishers for such low quality standards...

Do you want to find the extraordinary amongst the ordinary of your life?

As I read "Wizards, Wardrobes and Wookies", I really enjoyed how Connie contrasted all of the extraordinary events of Harry Potter (and the other wonderful fantasy stories I had enjoyed) against biblical events and our own "ordinary" lives. I was struck by the implications -- where does "ordinary" end and "extraordinary" begin? When opportunities show up in our lives do we have the courage to face our fears and "cross the threshold" and voyage out into the unknown? Connie provides a fun exploration into the world of the hero and their adventures to inspire us and to help open our eyes to the magic that can be found in our own lives. She also has some good tips on how to negotiate our way along difficult paths and how to prepare and arm ourselves for battle.

***** No one will be surprised to see a book praising the merits of C.S. Lewis' beloved Narnia series to Christians. However, suggesting that Christians can and some have already found echoes of their faith and lessons in, of all things, Star Wars and Harry Potter will probably scandalize as many people as it delights. Ignore those crying "heresy" and give this book a hearing. Ms. Neal brings out a wealth of Christian insights gleaned not only from Narnia, but also from that galaxy long ago and far away and from Hogwarts. In fact, I daresay she finds more to glean from the two strictly secular series than from the conventionally Christian one. The introduction to this tome is enough to reassure parents about the merits of reading or watching such things, but reading the entire volume will enhance your enjoyment of all three sagas. *****

Inspiring

This is an interesting book that brings together Star Wars, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Harry Potter in order to talk about the Bible and the hero journey in our own lives. I was definitely skeptical going into it because so much as already been said about Harry Potter and the hero's journey as well as Harry Potter and Christianity. (I know the same is true for Star Wars and Narnia as well but I haven't personally read anything like that about these works before). However I think that this book has a very good take on the subject.
There are a few things that bothered me a bit about this book. The first is that there are a few times when the author compares being a Democrat to being evil. Now, I certainly think that there are plenty of relevant topics if you want to compare these works to politics. But the author states that not believing in the non-existent weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and not believing that Voldemort had returned to power are the same and that that implies that those who didn't think we should have gone to war in Iraq are sinners. That argument doesn't follow.
There are also quite a few inaccuracies in the book. There are many little things I noticed about Harry Potter specifically, but as I know more details to Harry Potter than the average person, I was able to over look most of these since they didn't take away from the message of the work. There were some time-related discrepancies that did bother me. For example, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets can't be a reflection of life after September 11, 2001 because it was published well before then.
Having said all that, I think this book did a very good job of making the Bible more exciting and interesting by relating it well to pop culture. And as this is the main aim of the book, I would say that overall this book is a great success.

Very, Very Solid!

Thank heavens-close reading is not dead. Too many books on film sacrifice accuracy to a particular theoretical take, but these guys do not. And they write really clearly without all that unnecessary mumbo jumbo academics seem to like these days. I went right out and rented the movies and watched them all over again back to back and I have to say these writers really know the films inside and out and continually show us what actually happens on the screen (which is often contrary to what I remembered happening, but when I watched them again, these guys are always right, at least as far as I can tell). Best yet, the theory is not "on top" so to speak and seems really rooted in the films; they subtly shift the theoretical approach based upon what the films actually seem to be saying.
The first chapter on Alien is really nice coverage of all the stuff already written on it (and there has been a lot of it) but they also manage to weave it all together into a nice, historical, narrative of how one of the best sci-fi movies ever came to be and how different cultural theorists read the character of Ripley. Everyone seems to remember her tiny white panties, but who now remembers the furor over her "trash mouth"? Even more, who remembers that Ripley was the first female protagonist (ever?) to kill the monster on her own?
The second chapter kind of rags on Cameron a bit for the "Reagan-era" plot of the film, but these guys are right on with their reading of Ripley as remade into a "mom" and the hard-bodied Vasquez as a really new thing on the screen. This has always been my favorite of the films and it was really interesting for them to show me why I like it so much! (Lets just say is not as scary as Alien on a LOT of levels).
I never liked Alien3 but I think I understand it now. The film was not really intended for an audience like me. I don't like to see my heroes die, female or not, and the ending was really a downer. The context the authors give the film, however, makes a lot of sense: Ripley really does land in a "feminist hell" where she is raped, gets "pregnant," and, surrounded by right wing religious jerks, has to step up and take charge to save the human species again. The ending is really a big "F-you" to everyone (typical David Fincher-but this was the first time he did it).
And then there is Alien Resurrection. I hated this film when it came out. However, I just watched it again and almost died laughing. How could I have missed the fact that a film written by Joss (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) Whedon and Jean Pierre (Delicatessen and Amelie) Jeunot had to be funny? I just thought it was a grumpy, boring film, but I had really missed the boat on this one. From the very first shot-two guards chewing gum, guns aimed at each other's heads, fingers on the triggers-these writers took the blinders off my eyes and the whole film changed. I swear I must have seen a different movie altogether. I didn't even remember Sigourney Weaver and Winona Ryder being so good on screen together. (Personally, I think the sound track may be a problem with Alien Resurrection, but that's just my thinking). Ron Pearlman is even funny doing a rip-off of earlier characters on TV and in movies. If you remember the film Ice Pirates-and these guys certainly do-then you know what I mean.
Which brings me to another great thing about the book: they really make connections to a lot of other movies and some of them were BIG movies at one time that have sort of been forgotten. I now have a whole second list of films to watch again. Molly Ringwald was in Space Hunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone?
This was a really great book about women and men in science fiction film.

RIPLEY BELIEVE IT OR NOT

I REALLY DID LIKE THIS BOOK FOR THE FACT THAT I AM A BIG FAN OF THE ALIEN MOVIES AND BOOKS. I FOUND THIS BOOK LOOKING FOR UNDERLYING MEANINGS AND VARIOUS OTHER CONNOTATIONS. WHEN THE AUTHOR REHASHED THE PLOT IN EACH MOVIE IT BROUGHT BACK SOME GREAT MEMORIES AND EXCITING MOMENTS. AS I READ FURTHER AND DEEPER INTO THIS BOOK I FOUND MANY SEXUAL AND MALE FEMALE MEANINGS THAT I NEVER SAW BEFORE OR CARE ABOUT NOW. THE ANALYSIS OF THE RIPLEY CHARACTER IS REALLY INTERESTING AND WELL DONE. FOR SOME PEOPLE THIS BOOK IS A VERY IN DEPTH AND A VERY DIFFERENT LOOK AT THESE IDEAS AND MEANINGS. FOR ME I JUST WANT TO ENJOY THE ALIEN EXPERIENCE. I REALLY NEVER NOTICED IF THE ENTRANCE TO THE ALIEN DERELICT IN ALIEN LOOKED LIKE A VAGINA OR THAT THE ORIGINAL CHESTBUSTER LOOKS LIKE A "LITTLE DICK WITH TEETH". MAYBE IT'S ME BUT MY MIND IS NOT CONSTANTLY ON SEX OR MALE FEMALE MEANINGS AND BODY LANGUAGE. IF YOU LIKE THE ALIEN EXPERIENCE AND ARE OPEN MINDED ABOUT THE THINGS I HAVE MENTIONED THEN THIS IS A GREAT BOOK FOR YOU. IF YOU JUST ENJOY THE RIPLEY CHARACTER AND ENJOY ALIEN MOVIES THEN IT IS STILL A GOOD READ.

Great operative atlas

This text is a great operative atlas which is extremely helpful for any thoracic surgeon or trainee. The focus of the book is on the operative anatomy, not clinical presentation, pathophysiology, etc. so it will complement, but can not replace a thoracic text such as Shields, or Pearson, or others.

The operative procedures are broken down into step by step illustrations and descriptions which are very clearly illustrated.

All illustrations are done by the same artist in a very consistent clear black/white line drawing style which I find much clearer than photographs. Other books which use photographs are not as clear.

The chapters cover everything from the basic- Mediastinoscopy (some great 3 dimensional drawings of the mediastinum and scope) to the essential chapters on esophagectomy and lobectomy. Each lobectomy procedure is illustrated quite well. There are also chapters on the more rare procedures such as superior sulcus tumors: anterior and posterior approach (with good depiction of every step) and mediastinal tracheostomy.

I would strongly recommend it for any thoracic surgeon or surgical trainee's library.

The only drawback (if any): the book is about open surgical procedures, and VATS lobectomy which is becoming more common is not covered. Hopefully a second edition could be updated to cover the minimally invasive thoracic oncology procedures.

About the Author
Eric W. Noreen is a globe-trotting academic who has held appointments at institutions in the United States, Europe, and Asia. He is currently Professor of Accounting at the University of Washington and Visiting Price Waterhouse Professor of Management Information & Control at INSEAD, an international graduate school of business located in France. He received his B.A. degree from the University of Washington and MBA and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford University. A Certified Management Accountant, he was awarded a Certificate of Distinguished Performance by the Institute of Certified Management Accountants.

Ray H. Garrison is emeritus Professor of Accounting at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Brigham Young University and his D.B.A. degree from Indiana University. As a certified public accountant, Professor Garrison has been involved in management consulting work with both national and regional accounting firms. He has published articles in The Accounting Review, Management Accounting, and other professional journals. Innovation in the classroom has earned Professor Garrison the Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Teaching Award from Brigham Young University.

Peter C. Brewer is a professor in the Department of Accountancy at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. He holds a BS degree in accounting from Penn State University, an MS degree in accounting from the University of Virginia, and a PhD from the University of Tennessee. He has published 30 articles in a variety of journals including: Management Accounting Research, the Journal of Information Systems, Cost Management, Strategic Finance, the Journal of Accountancy, Issues in Accounting Education, and the Journal of Business Logistics. Professor Brewer is a member of the editorial boards of Issues in Accounting Education and the Journal of Accounting Education. His article “Putting Strategy into the Balanced Scorecard” won the 2003 International Federation of Accountants’ Articles of Merit competition and his articles “Using Six Sigma to Improve the Finance Function” and “Lean Accounting: What’s It All About?” were awarded the Institute of Management Accountants’ Lybrand Gold and Silver Medals in 2005 and 2006. He has received Miami University’s Richard T. Farmer School of Business Teaching Excellence Award and has been recognized on two occasions by the Miami University Associated Student Government for “making a remarkable commitment to students and their educational development.” He is a leading thinker in undergraduate management accounting curriculum innovation and is a frequent presenter at various professional and academic conferences.Prior to joining the faculty at Miami University, Professor Brewer was employed as an auditor for Touche Ross in the firm’s Philadelphia office. He also worked as an internal audit manager for the Board of Pensions of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). He frequently collaborates with companies such as Harris Corporation, Ghent Manufacturing, Cintas, Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Schneider Electric, Lenscrafters, and Fidelity Investments in a consulting or case writing capacity.

This book meets the requirements for the Managerial Accounting course at California State University Dominguez Hills for the Fall 2012 term. The book is new to the faculty and has some typos. Otherwise the content is straight forward. A better explanaiton of the online resources available might be helpful.
