This was given to my 20 year old daughter by our financial advisor. I read it and decided to get the one for my age (50+). The advice is very sound. The writing is clear with a bit of humor. The budgeting section and credit card sections are the ones that got me thinking that I'd buy the book for me even though there will be some repetition.

Spot on advice for late teens / young adults
By Kyle
I bought this for my daughter and read through it, marking sections I want her to zero in on. It is rather elementary for an older person but I feel it is spot on for a young adult. She will thank me later for this gift, even though she isn't overly eager to read it right now at 18.

The Good Cop (Carter Ross Mysteries), by Brad Parks

As long as Newark Eagle-Examiner reporter Carter Ross turns in his stories on deadline, no one bats an eye if he doesn't wander into the newsroom until 10 or 11 in the morning. So it's an unpleasant surprise when he's awakened at 8:38 by a phone call from his boss, telling him a local policeman was killed and Carter will be covering the story, starting immediately. He's baffled when, hours later, there are still no other reporters at the widow's house. And then he gets another call from his boss: the story's off, the cop committed suicide. But when Carter's calls to the police and the morgue are repeatedly blocked, it's clear someone knows more than he's saying about the cop's death.

*Starred Review* This is the fourth outing for Carter Ross, the New Jersey newspaper reporter with a strong sense of justice, a passion for journalism, and a self-deprecating sense of humor. Carter is awakened early one morning by a phone call from his boss, who orders him to follow up on a cop killing. Carter visits the widow and learns a lot about the victim, none of which makes sense when he is later told that the cop took his own life. The widow is adamant that her husband was murdered, but when her preacher pulls his support from the investigation, Carter knows something is up. He keeps digging, despite being shot at, while his current flame and previous girlfriend complicate his life further. Meanwhile, there is another story line involving gun smuggling that eventually intersects with the cop killing, making for a thoughtful look at gun laws in New Jersey that, in light of the Sandy Hook massacre, becomes even more compelling and disturbing. This is a tautly written page-turner with charm and humor, a terrific combination that is sure to appeal to David Rosenfelt and Janet Evanovich fans. --Stacy Alesi

Laugh out loud funny
By Susan Johnson
I love this series with Carter Ross, the intrepid newspaper reporter in Newark, N.J. Carter is a nice guy. You could invite him over dinner and be entertained. He is, also, a very good reporter and stumbles into a mystery of two dead cops who supposedly committed suicide. His investigation takes him all over Newark and into strange places. He visits a warehouse/store that is so laugh out loud funny that tears rolled out of my eyes.

I don't know what it is NJ that produces such funny detectives. Carter is a breath of fresh of air with innovative plots. He's got a great supporting cast of characters including a boss who wants to have his baby. Why is it never sex discrimination when it goes the other way? I digress.

If you're looking for a good mystery that is fun, you can't go wrong with this one. Pour yourselves a nice beverage and enjoy the time you spend with Carter Ross. It's a great way to spend the day.

THE GOOD COP is the fourth book in Brad Parks's mystery series and will emerge as a terrific summer read
By Bookreporter
Brad Parks draws Newark, New Jersey and the Newark-Eagle Examiner as if they are characters in his novel, THE GOOD COP. His protagonist, investigative reporter Carter Ross, tells in the first person the story in which he becomes embroiled, a device that allows readers to really get to know him. As he introduces himself, Carter says that his job does not require him to get to the office at any particular time before 11ish am.

So when his phone rings and wakes him up at 8:30am, Carter is very disgruntled. He grudgingly takes the call, which comes from the newsroom. On the other end is Kate Mossman, "one of the editors on what was formally called `the Nonstop Newsdesk...to feed the insatiable content beast that is the [paper's] Web site." She is trying to tell him that a policeman has been shot; he is immediately fully awake and "grabbed his notepad." This is definitely his news story.

The cop is Detective Sergeant Darius Kipps, and he was attached to the Fourth Precinct, which Carter says he "knew well." But instead of going to the station, he decides to check the property records; he finds that even though Darius had several addresses, it seemed that he lived in East Orange with his wife, Naomi. Carter decides that while other reporters can cover the detective and his death, he is going to visit the widow. Even though he doesn't know all of the tertiary facts, he feels that the widow is the best one to interview. He tells readers that a policeman killed in New Jersey will "attract the attention of every television and radio station in the Greater New York area."

As he is knocking on her door, Carter ruminates about how difficult and stressful this kind of visit could be. But in the end, he rationalizes his way into saying that words can be uplifting and "they can provide hope. They even comfort a grieving family." Carter is surprised to find the house full of black women who clearly are there to comfort Naomi. They are both curious and hostile when he is introduced to them. Mimi (her nickname) also shows him her newborn and tells him how much her husband had wanted a boy.

As Carter is working the story and his contacts, he gets a call from his editor that the story is not going to happen. Darius committed suicide. From what Carter has learned from his associates and family, he does not believe that the cop was dirty. Fusco, his policeman friend, almost breaks Carter in two when he bravely suggests that if he was, that would be a motive. NO WAY!! Fusco is adamant.

While readers are immersed in this convoluted suicide/murder, another subplot emerges: gun running. Parks introduces this as a crime with which dirty cops are involved. They are the brains behind bringing the merchandise into New Jersey and wherever the money is. Carter gets involved in this investigation too, even before it is a legitimate case.

THE GOOD COP is the fourth book in Brad Parks's mystery series and will emerge as a terrific summer read. His writing is easy to read, and the complicated cases he foists upon Carter Ross are helping him grow as a hero. Readers will find themselves happily going along with him as he becomes involved in a series of cases.

Breathtaking read!
By K. Loftis
I stumbled upon this book by total accident and set it aside for several months before reading it. I read it in four days! This is the first book I have read by this author, and I now see why it was a bookclub main selection!
The characters are memorable and and "real." They are not perfect-- like all of us, they are flawed-- they all have weaknesses and strengths, and this humanity is what makes them so unforgetable! The three Sylvander sisters are all very unique. Each subplot is fascinating, and the interweaving of the stories of the three sisters gives the book even more excitement for the reader. The passion and pathos of the story-- the pain and triumphs, tragedies and romance, make this novel so endearing and memorable.
Briskin also uses vivid imagery to bring the settings and characters to life in the minds and hearts of her readers. The locations are exotic-- from London to L.A and all the way to the Middle East. The plot is highly involved and truly fascinating. The characters are not stereotypical in that noone is "all good" or "all bad." I felt, while reading this, as if they were part of my family. I laughed and cried for them as they progressed through the story. I literally clapped and cheered in places, and wiped tears from my eyes at others!
Walk, don't run, and find a copy of this book! If you like good literature, you won't be disappointed. I will cherish rereading this book for a lifetime! It's that wonderful!

One of the best books I have read!
By Betzabeth Sandoval
I'm only 15 years old but I have been reading romance novels and other books that wouldn't be normally read by a teenager. This book made me cry many a time while I read it which was about four days. This is not unusual but it made me think and it made me realize how much our actions can shape others lives. I loved reading her book and I am hoping to find her other books so I may read them as well. This story has a very good plot and I recommend it to others and maybe if you are a romantic like myself you get pulled into the action and put yourself in their shoes like I did. Because I have such a soft heart I actually experience the pain the character must be feeling in parts of this book. I loved it and hope this review will prompt others to read it.

A funny novel about sex, or rather (which is rarer) a novel which is funny as well as touching about sex ... elegant, exact and melodious -- Isabel Quigly Sunday Telegraph The delicious adventures of a young Casanova who appreciates maturity while acquiring it himself. It's always a risky business, re-reading a book which was important to you in your adolescence. But re-reading this one, I was struck by a great deal that I missed before ... a much richer book than I remembered. Immensely pleasurable. -- A. A. "The best summing-up of In Praise of Older Women was given in the London Sunday Citizen: Vizinczey really knows, and Henry Miller and the rest - even D H Lawrence - only thought they did. His knowledge extends to all fields, including the literary one... The novel has a dynamism which is defined by one of its own phrases: Havent you heard of Einsteins law? Pleasure turns into energy." -- Clara Janés, El País (Madrid) This refers to the Spanish edition of the novel

"Erotic situations, games, frustrations, naive miscalculations, humiliations, joyful and tearful pleasures... Vizinczey never exaggerates, he writes with clear detachment not devoid of irony:his graceful and suggestive style frees us from the anguish that love often brings with it. A little masterpiece in which sex is knowledge and good literature." -- Maria Dols, Ajoblanco (Barcelona)This refers to the Spanish edition of the novel

"An erotic classic of subtle complexity, humour and wit. An invitation to the experience of love, to adventure. But it is also the portrait of someone who is familiar to us from family stories, someone we have all known at some time. And perhaps Vizinczey's great success is owing to this, and to his style, which is so unaffected, so natural and at the same time so perfectly exact." Menene Gras Balaguer, La Vanguardia (Barcelona) This refers to the Spanish edition of the novel

"Full of wisdom and irony, with a shot of heart's blood and a drop of melancholy added. A tribute to women as well as the portrait of an age which has been irrevocably lost. A book that caresses the heart and soul, without becoming sentimental." Bernd Lubowski, Berliner Morgen Post This refers to the German edition of the novel

"The delicious adventures of a young Casanova who appreciates maturity while acquiring it himself. In turn naive, sophisticated, arrogant, disarming, the narrator woos his women and his tale wins the reader." Polly Devlin, Vogue

Better insights into Canadians than women
By D. P. Birkett
It is a coming of age novel, that is to say a thinly disguised autobiography which, in the male version, always describes a sensitive youth growing up in a hostile environment where his gifts are not appreciated, having a series of affairs with women, and ending up a sadder and wiser man, usually a university teacher. Such plots are necessarily thin and the descriptions of amatory conquests become repetitious. The scenes of life in wartorn and communist Hungary, and what it is like to be a refugee are interesting. He nails Canada. The "older" women are, in fact, seldom as much as ten years older than the protagonist - none is over 40. I think in its day the sex descriptions were shocking. The female characters do not, to me, emerge as three-dimensional. Some of them are tragic and worn-down and poverty-stricken but they all want one thing and the hero is kind enough to give it to them. I think that in the year 2000 his view of women is demeaning.

Captivating
By Marisa
I first wanted to read this book when I was in high school, however, my mother would not allow it. Stephen Vizinczey is a cousin of my father's and that is how I arrived at an interest in his work. After reading the book, now at the age of 28, I can understand why my mother would not allow me to read it at such a young age. The book revels in a young man's quest of sexual experiences and learnings with the opposite sex. It is not detailed in the sense of a steamy harlequin (thank goodness!). Instead, the book entails more of an open aired and very tasteful approach to the combined meaning of sex, relationships, and life. I disagree with some of the other reviews which regard the book as what it is like to be a young male in hungarian nationality. The book begins in that part of the world, however, being a first generation American from Hungarian descent, I believe that this book is true to the male species in any culture. The book is amusing and light hearted and is a must read no matter where you are from.

Some Observations on In Praise of Older Women
By A Customer
I have just read In Praise of Older Women for the second time. Many reviewers have drawn attention to the wisdom contained in this little book, which slyly presents itself as a breviary for young men without lovers. I am reluctant to insist on its status as "an erotic classic," for fear that to do so would confine it to a very narrow context. Indeed, the erotic scenes do not constitute the heart and soul of the story, nor do they even take up very much room. Rather, the book brings some very subtle psychological observations to bear on human relationships. Note, for example, the analysis of the "rapport des forces" between the older women and the younger hero. Zsuzsa, a "small, colourless woman," struggles to overcome her pride. Her coyness turns to compliance only when Vajda snaps at her, showing his passion (one recalls a scene in The Red and the Black: playing for somewhat higher stakes that Vajda, Julien tears a sword from the wall, imprudently displaying his passion before Mathilde, who briefly sees that he loves her). Other women aim stinging remarks at the young man only to succumb to his advances; or else they are guarded and surly the morning after, suspicious (and, in many case, rightly so) of the young Don Juan's motives. In another case, it is Vajda who is prideful. In his efforts to keep up with an energetic violinist whose relentless athletic pursuits and strange sleeping habits he takes as a challenge, the poor Casanova wears himself down to the bone. Vajda also writes of the anonymous onanists, versions of Dostoevsky's "underground man," who keep to themselves and satiate their erotic cravings in solitude. These misanthropes belong to the category of men who have not opened themselves up to women, who want to seduce and dominate the opposite sex, unlike Vajda, who looks on women as "accomplices." The book is a very strong and subtle critique of pride. When I think back on its contents, I remember not only the pleasant watercolors of Hungary and Rome, the descriptions of bodies and faces, and the maxims worthy of La Rochefoucauld ("Whatever is sanctioned by society as a principal good also becomes a moral imperative"), but also the wry humor that examines human interaction with sympathy and insight. While desire plays a large role in the recollections of the hero, the extent to which the author soars above his past is quite remarkable. To be invited to partake of his calm gaze is a pleasure worth repeating. One can read this book again without tiring of it.
The book was very well received in France. "Un bain de bonheur" was how one reviewer described it. How to account for its popularity in Europe (the book has been a best-seller in Spain and elsewhere I believe)? It is true that eroticism has been raised to the level of a value in France, which deploys its Catholic moeurs like scud missiles against a monolithic (and not wholly imaginary) American puritanism. Ideology aside, the fact remains that France knows how to appreciate good literature.
I see that the author himself has posted a review translated from the French. Good for him. America should know about the European point of view.

Forever Chic: Frenchwomen's Secrets for Timeless Beauty, Style, and Substance, by Tish Jett

For any woman who last saw forty on her speedometer comes a sparkling new primer for aging—the French way—with grace and style. Frenchwomen of a certain age (over forty) are captivating and complex. They appear younger than their years and remain stylish throughout their lives. They look at birthdays as a celebration of a life well-lived and perhaps a good reason to go shopping before they dress to perfection for a celebration of another anniversaire. American-born journalist and blogger Tish Jett has lived among the French for years and has studied them and stalked them to learn their secrets. Exploring how their wardrobe, beauty, diet, and hair rituals evolve with time and how some aspects of their signature styles never change, Jett shows how Frenchwomen know their strengths, hide their weaknesses, and never talk about their fears, failures, or flaws. After all, in France, beauty, style, and charm have no expiration dates!

Review
"French women have an enviable reputation for being svelte, sexy, and stylish and for possessing a certain je ne sais quoi that doesn't seem to diminish with age. Fashion journalist and editor Tish Jett reveals how middle-aged French women remain 'forever chic' in this detailed look at the diet, skin, hair, makeup and exercise regimen of la femme d'un certain age…this volume provides commonsense and decidedly French head-to-toe beauty routines that yield results. Readers will also learn how to use color, accessories, and figure-flattering clothing to emulate the classic Parisian sense of style. Verdict…worthwhile and entertaining." Library Journal

Right up with the best of the francophile bunch of books
By overtakenbyanap
Terrific new book in the whole francophile genre. I just got it delivered to my kindle, and have skimmed thru it. Each chapter takes a look at how French women handle different aspects of feminine life from skin care to clothing, diet, exercise and far more. This is a grown up version of Helena Frith Powell's "All You Need to be Impossibly French" intended for the over 40 crowd. It is a longer version of Anne Barone's Chic and Slim Toujours; Aging Beautifully the French Way. It doesn't copy either author, it adds to the information and complements it.

The preface starts by asking what age has to do with anything really? She briefly explains her move to France for 2 years that morphed into 25 and still going as she met and married a charming French man. Like others before her, she looked around her and saw a different landscape. She liked how French women around her approached life, and set out to find what they were doing that made them a bit more attractive, different, worth emulating.

As she covers each subject she uses a lot of different sources from dermatologists to her French girlfriends. The information is extensive and each chapter had new stuff I've not bumped into before.. This is an excellent new book in what is becoming a crowded field. Entire books are written on the French diet, and her chapter summarizes much of that wisdom, but she gives fresh good advice.

Even if you own Helena Frith Powell, Debra Ollivier, Anne Barone, Mireille Guiliano, Jennifer Scott and Marie-Anne LeCoeur you will not be disappointed in this new book.

Chapter 1 begins with Allure. A very French concept and one that encompasses the whole person, brains, soul, heart and body. What goes on inside, makes a great difference to the attractiveness of the whole package. This has to do with decisions and priorities. In a sense this chapter and the ninth chapter are the bookends of this book. Chapter one is talking about moving into change from the head and heart on out, while the last chapter pulls it together discussing poise, charm and generally being fun to be around.

Chapter 2 covers skin care, from face to body, including nails and feet. Some great advice aimed at over 40 women. Hopefully younger women reading this will remember that and not complain about it. She does give some advice in AVOIDING things like smoking and sun exposure. Apparently a lot of older women in France ARE quitting smoking simply for the sake of their skin. Who knew? I was fascinated by a tip, new to me, about soaking the feet in a bath of warm water, epsom salts and ASPIRINS. Yes, she adds a couple of aspirin to the soak, which soften the hard skin, and helps slough dead skin. Makes perfect sense since Aspirin is also known as Beta Hydroxy Acid or BHA for short in creams and potions that work at loosening dead skin cells. Much more in this informative chapter.

Chapter 3 is on Makeup, The focus is building a light, natural look. Chapter 4 on Hair, Cut, condition and colour has some excellent tips by 2 top French colorists which I plan to try soon..

Chapter 5 covers Dieting and the art of eating well. This one has a few new wrinkles to the whole French diet paradox but for the most part it's common sense and if you've read widely in this subject, it won't be much new. However it's always nice to hear it stated a slightly different way, and she does add a couple of new things from a French nutrition expert.

Chapter 6 is Exercise--and she says yes, as French women age in the baby boomer generation, they have definitely picked up the exercise habits. But you still won't catch them hanging out all day in exercise gear, nor are their exercise get ups baggy, loose or in loud screechy colour combos. As always, they fit well, show off the body that took so much effort, and announce quietly with conviction that this person maintains her style and chic always.

Chapter 7 On to the closet and the fabled French wardrobe. Less about the minimalist wardrobe and more about dressing well to suit yourself. Chapter 8 Accessories. How to deploy them effectively. This is another chapter worth the price of the book just for the tips alone.

Chapter 9 pulls it all together. I'd call it being fun to be around but the author talks about poise and charm. It's something that is often lost in a white knuckle drive to succeed here in North America. Just how much fun ARE you just to hang out with. Do you put your career and your goals so far in the front that your friends, husband or kids feel they come a far second. She gets into something I've really only heard Anne Barone get in depth with and that is the intellectual legacy of the salonistes. The art of conversation, the development of the intellect as essential to the whole package as laughter and a warm smile.

The epilogue is aptly titled La Nouvelle Moi, A Work in Progress.

Great book, loved it, and I'm glad I bought a copy. It is a complement to the authors above, and is a welcome addition on my bookshelf.

Not only in France ...
By E. A. Moon
This book has some good advice for women who want to age well and with savoir faire. Women often take care of everyone else but themselves. The instructions on aircraft to put on your own oxygen mask before assisting someone else (take care of yourself first) holds true of 'real life' situations. This book is full of encouragement to women to take good care of themselves.

The advice to eat well but sparingly, go very light on alcohol, drink lots of water, exercise, cleanse and moisturize your skin religiously, don't overdo makeup, get a flattering haircut, do as much "investment dressing" as you can afford, take care of the clothing and shoes that you have, and stay engaged and informed with the world around you is terrific advice for everyone. Also, if you do these things, you end up saving time and money. A few well-chosen outfits can last for years with good care and you can jazz them up with accessories that do not have to be pricey. Exercising and watching what you eat and drink keeps you healthy; it also means that you will be able to fit into those well-chosen outfits for longer, which saves money. A flattering haircut that works with your hair rather than against it means you will look good without constant fussing and using a lot of hair products. Good skin care means you spend less money on makeup because you will use less of it. Streamlining your makeup routine saves time and money. Keeping up with world events and cultural activities will enrich your life and make you an interesting person to be with. Et cetera. This is sound, practical advice, and the French are noted for their practicality.

However, what I find ludicrous is the idea that women in France--or to be precise, women of a certain socio-economic and educational level in the French capital--are the only ones who live this way. I live in Washington, DC, and I see many women of a certain age who are slim, dressed nicely (which doesn't have to mean expensively) attending lectures, concerts, the opera, art exhibits, etc. I definitely see women like this all over the place in New York City. One wonders where in the US the author was from that she seems unaware of this--the text on pages 221-222 would make you think that French women are unique in attending the ballet, lectures, and foreign movies. Women who age well can be found all over the world. In fact, my role model for aging well is a German woman whom I met in Munich in 1984 when she was about 47 and I was 28. I lived with her while attending the Goethe Institut. She was engaged, artistic, chic, well-read ... and all this was done as a divorced single mother on a social worker's salary. At age 75, she is still the same. She is one of the most influential people in my life.

You don't need wads of money, expensive clothes and skin products (the author name-drops several pricey products and clothing lines throughout the book) to age gracefully and with class ... and you certainly don't need to be French. I *greatly* admire the French emphasis on living well with aplomb but books like this one perpetuate the idea that this can only be done in Paris, and not just in Paris, but only in certain arrondissements. If 'Forever Chic' inspires women to take better care of themselves, that's all to the good. Read it for the good advice on self-care--read it especially for the idea that you are worth the time and effort--but don't think for a minute that it can't be done, and isn't being done, right here in the USA, and elsewhere.

Best of the Chic French Books
By Luisa M. Perkins
I've bought and read every single one of the "French/Chic/Thin" books. Some have been great, some not so much. This is the very best of them all if you're over forty. (If you're not, read Jennifer Scott's Lessons from Madame Chic--it's tout charmant.)

Tish Jett gives it to us American women straight. I bookmarked several pages as I read for later reference and immediately made an appointment with a dermatologist. Next, I'll go through my closet and use her principles to purge, refine, and upgrade (all on a budget).

I'm a huge Francophile. I've visited France several times, but I can never get enough. With Tish Jett's help, though, I can have a little bit of France with me all the time. Highly recommended.
