About the Author
Joanne Arford, a graduate of Western Michigan University, is currently an adjunct faculty member at the College of DuPage in Illinois. She has written several editions of the Advanced Word Desktop Publishing textbook. Audrey Roggenkamp has been teaching courses in the Business Information Technology department at Pierce College in Puyallup, including keyboarding, skill building, and Microsoft Office programs. In addition to this textbook, Ms. Roggenkamp has authored and co-authored many computer application textbooks for Paradigm Publishing including Marquee Series 2013, 2010, 2007, and 2003, Signature Series 2013, 2010, 2007, and 2003, Using Computers in the Medical Office: Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2010, 2007 and 2003, and Computer and Internet Essentials: Preparing for IC3. Ian Rutkosky teaches Business Technology courses at Pierce College in Puyallup. Good content; poor cover/binding for a textbook!

I wish it had the coil-type binding instead of the paperback cover. The book is heavy & book would not stay open to pages being studied. Book cover is now heavily creased.

Content is pretty good. The Key Points Review at the end of every chapter is somewhat beneficial if you REALLY have to know the "names" of terms. I just wish the term definitions were better matched to those in the review. Did not use the CD in class so I cannot say whether or not the material is relevant.

Good content but very heavy book!

Would have preferred the coil binding of past editions; coil binding allows book to lay flat. VERY heavy book due to type of paper used. Could have had similar results with lighter paper.

About the Author

A cultural critic, an intellectual, and a feminist writer, bell hooks is best known for classic books including Ain’t I a Woman, Bone Black, All About Love, Rock My Soul, Belonging, We Real Cool, Where We Stand, Teaching to Transgress, Teaching Community, Outlaw Culture, and Reel to Real. hooks is Distinguished Professor in Residence in Appalachian Studies at Berea College, and resides in her home state of Kentucky.

A PROPOSAL TO “BROADEN” FEMINIST THEORY, TO INCLUDE THE “MARGINS”…

bell hooks (all lower-case letters; born Gloria Jean Watkins in 1952) is an American author, feminist, and social activist. She has written many books, such as Outlaw Culture: Resisting Representations, Killing Rage: Ending Racism, and many more.

She wrote in the Acknowledgements section of this 1984 book, “During much of the writing of Ain't I a Woman: Black Women and Feminism, I worked in isolation. It was my hope that the publication of this work would draw me closer to feminist activists, especially black women. Ironically, some of the most outspoken black women active in [the] feminist movement responded by trashing both it and me… I was totally unprepared for the hostility and contempt show me by women whom I did not and do not see as enemies… Unfortunately it is often easier to ignore, dismiss, reject, and even hurt one another rather than engage in constructive confrontation. Were it not for the overwhelmingly positive responses to the book from black women… I might have become terribly disheartened and disillusioned… Such encouragement renews my commitment to feminist politics and strengthens my conviction that the value of feminist writing must be determined by … the extent to which it draws women and men who are outside feminist struggle inside.”

She explains in the Preface, “Much feminist theory emerges from privileged women who live at the center, whose perspectives on reality rarely include knowledge and awareness of the lives of women and men who live in the margin. As a consequence, feminist theory lacks wholeness… At its most visionary, it will emerge from individuals who have knowledge of both margin and center… It is the absence of feminist theory that addresses margin and center that has led me to write this book… Throughout the work my thoughts have been shaped by the conviction that feminism must become a mass based political movement if it is to have a revolutionary, transformative impact on society.”

She begins the first chapter with a critique of Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique: “She did not discuss who would be called in to take care of the children and maintain the home if more women like herself were freed from their house labor and give equal access with white men to the professions. She did not speak of the needs of women without men, without children, without homes. She ignored the existence of all non-white women and poor white women… She made her plight and the plight of white women like herself synonymous with a condition affecting all American women. In so doing, she deflected attention away from her classism, her racism, her sexist attitudes towards the masses of American women… Specific problems and dilemmas of leisure class white housewives … were not the pressing political concerns of masses of women. Masses of women were concerned about economic survival, ethnic and racial discrimination, etc. … [her book] can also be seen as a case study of narcissism, insensitivity, sentimentality, and self-indulgence…” (Pg. 1-3)

She points out, “One factor that makes interaction between multi-ethnic groups of women difficult and sometimes impossible is our failure to recognize that a behavior pattern in one culture may be unacceptable in another, that it may have different signification cross-culturally. Through repeated teaching of a course titled ‘Third World Women in the United States,’ I have learned the importance of learning what we called one another’s cultural codes… By learning one another’s cultural codes and respecting our differences, we felt a sense of community, of Sisterhood. Respecting diversity does not mean uniformity or sameness.” (Pg. 56-57)

She observes, “Women’s liberationists not only equated psychological pain with material deprivation to de-emphasize class privilege; they often suggested it was the more severe problem. They managed to overlook the fact that many women suffer both psychologically and materially and for that reason alone changing their social status merited greater attention than careerism… Had poor women set the agenda for [the] feminist movement, they might have decided that class struggle would be a central feminist issue; that poor and privileged women would work to understand class structure and the way it pits women against one another.” (Pg. 60-61)

She asserts, “Bourgeois white women cannot conceptualize the bonds that develop between women and men in liberation struggle and have not had as many positive experiences working with men politically… Despite the prevalence of sexism in black communities, the role black women play in social institutions… is recognized by everyone as significant and valuable… Without the material input of black women, as participants and leaders, many male-dominated institutions in black communities would cease to exist; this is not the case in all white communities.” (Pg. 69-70)

She argues, “Often women of color active in feminist movement are anti-intellectual. Many of us have not had access to university educations and do not hold advanced degrees. We may equate white female hegemonic dominance of feminist theory and practice with educational status. We may not attack that hegemony (which stems from class and race hierarchies) but instead ‘put down’ intellectual work. By dismissing theory and privileging organization work, some women of color are able to see themselves as more politically engaged where it really counts. Yet by buying into this dichotomy between theory and practice, we… support the notion (too often fostered by white women) that their role is to do the ‘brain’ work, developing ideas, theories, etc., while our role is to do either the ‘dirty’ work or contribute the experience to validate and document their analysis. Women of color need to develop intellectually.” (Pg. 113-114)

She notes, “Feminist thinkers… believed that assertion of the primacy of sexuality would be a liberatory gesture. They urged women to initiate sexual advances, to enjoy sex, to experiment with new relationships, to be sexually ‘free.’ Yet most women did not have the leisure, the mobility, the contacts, or even the desire to indulge in this so called ‘sexual liberation.’ Young heterosexual women, single and childless, teenagers and college students, political progressives, were the groups most eager and able to pattern their sexual behavior after what was essentially an inversion of the male notion of sexual liberation… it did not, however, deconstruct the power relations between men and women in the sexual sphere.” (Pg. 147)

Not quite as acerbic as her earlier book ‘Ain’t I a Woman,’ this book is a thought-provoking contribution to feminist theory, that will be of great interest to feminists, or those interested in womanism, Women’s Studies, Black Studies, or similar “progressive” areas.

Quick and lusty overnight in a Scottish Countryside B & B

This is a 2 hour read, quick and fun. Hot and Fast. No building of plot her folks. Just go to bed at a Scottish B & B with visions of Great Gran's mutterings of castles and destinies to come... and wake up in the darkness of the 1700's with a hot and injured Scottish warrior in your bedroom, claiming it is his. Fortunately, he believes her tale of time travel and with memories of his mother's Fae tales and conjurings in his memory, Gavin comes up with a spell to tie them to one another when she travels back to 2013.

entertaining and engaging nature

Becoming Animal: Contemporary Art in the Animal Kingdom, is a catalogue featuring contemporary artists who participated in an exhibition held at Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. The artists in question all deal with issues regarding the relationship between humans and animals, through media including installation and performance.
This book has been one of my favourite artist reference books ever since I serendipitously stumbled across it in my University library. It is a beautifully laid out book, with clear full-colour photos of the spotlighted artists' works. The book also contains informative and interesting interviews with the artists.
The book has aided me greatly in the past for research purposes; I am currently studying art at University and much of my work revolves around an interest in human/animal behaviour. I now own my own copy of the book to use as reference for a dissertation that I am currently writing.
Becoming Animal has introduced me to an array of artists that I hadn't heard of but have since been greatly inspired by. In particular, the haunting works of Jane Alexander and the playful nature of Kathy High struck a chord with me. I also enjoyed the reference to Joseph Beuys' work “How to Explain Pictures to a Dead Hare”, a bizarre but brilliant performance by one of my all-time favourite artists.
This book has taken pride of place on my bookshelf due to its entertaining and engaging nature. As well as being highly useful academically, it is also nice to just sit with it and look at the pictures.

Japanese society in the 1990s and 2000s produced a range of complicated material about sexualized schoolgirls, and few topics have caught the imagination of western observers so powerfully. While young Japanese girls had previously been portrayed as demure and obedient, in training to become the obedient wife and prudent mother, in recent years less than demure young women have become central to urban mythology and the content of culture. The cultic fascination with the figure of a deviant school girl, which has some of its earliest roots in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, likewise re-emerged and proliferated in fascinating and timely ways in the 1990s and 2000s.

Through exploring the history and politics underlying the cult of girls in contemporary Japanese media and culture, this book presents a striking picture of contemporary Japanese society from the 1990s to the start of the 2010s. At its core is an in-depth case study of the media delight and panic surrounding delinquent prostitute schoolgirls. Sharon Kinsella traces this social panic back to male anxieties relating to gender equality and female emancipation in Japan. In each chapter in turn, the book reveals the conflicted, nostalgic, pornographic, and at times distinctly racialized manner, in which largely male sentiments about this transformation of gender relations have been expressed. The book simultaneously explores the stylistic and flamboyant manner in which young women have reacted to the weight of an obsessive and accusatory male media gaze.

Assassin’s Creed Volume 1: Desmond is the first of six books to be published for this story. This first book, made by Titan Books, covers the first issue of the story following Desmond’s initial capture and work with his ancestor Altair as well as Aquilus of the Roman Empire. This book makes an effort to try to explain why Abstergo has Demond and what they’re doing with him but having played the game gives you a much better insight. Eric Corbeyran made a valiant attempt at staying true to the story but some of it has been changed slightly. Not enough to completely throw off the story but it’s not identical to the games. Otherwise, we get a peek at Subject 16 and Aquilus but I’m guessing we’ll see more of them in the following books.

This edition is an oversized hardcover with no dustjacket. It has been translated from the original French language it was published in and the translation is perfect. You can’t even tell it was originally another language like is common with some mangas. The book is quite short at only 48 pages given the $10 price tag but it’s worth picking up if you can find it cheaper. This is the first part of the first chapter (3 issues) and there is a second chapter that is another 3 issues as well. Definitely something to get if you’re a fan of the game.

Not Bad On It's Own

I like the art and the story is decent, but I don't like the differences from the games. Ubisoft has done a good job in ensuring very close continuity between it's various mediums. This is the first time I've seen major issues with it where some stuff just flat out contradicts what happened in the games.

The flashback story is good though and poses no problems with continuity. So read it for that and take the future events with Desmond and everyone with a grain of salt. It's not a must read by any stretch, but worth it for big fans. The presentation (hardcover, nice glossy pages) is also done very well.

(I gave the same review for all 3 volumes as the same applies to all of them)

I have bought and read all three in this series, and I have played all the video games.
I really enjoyed the artwork and the introduction of new characters. But even with all of that I still find the stories a bit hard to follow.

Overall these books are a fun piece of AC lore for any fan of the games!
