I preferred Marriot's over Dubin's and Thaler's as it covers certain topics (e.g., alternative lead placement) better than the other two (although I liked Thaler's for its straightforward organization and use of cases). It is written simply, with topics broken down into chunks, so that one can learn how to read EKGs in small daily sessions (15-30min a day over half a year).

Very complex. Difficult to read. I'm a medicine resident and is familiar with basic EKG but this book is hard to read and understand. There are way better books on the market for better price.

Tagalog is a language spoken by twenty-two million people in the Philippines. Diwata is a Tagalog term meaning "muse." Diwata is also a term for a mythical being who resides in nature, and who human communities must acknowledge, respect, and appease in order to live harmoniously in this world.

In her book Diwata, Barbara Jane Reyes frames her poems between the Book of Genesis creation story and the Tagalog creation myth, placing her work somewhere culturally between both traditions. Also setting the tone for her poems is the death and large shadow cast by her grandfather, a World War II veteran and Bataan Death March survivor, who has passed onto her the responsibility of remembering. Reyes' voice is grounded in her community's traditions and histories, despite war and geographical dislocation.

She was her father's mermaid child,
A river demon, elders said.

She mimicked her cetaceous brothers,
Abalone diving bluest depths.

She polished smooth her brothers' masks,

A whispered requiem.

Barbara Jane Reyes is author of two previous poetry collections including Poeta en San Francisco, which was awarded the 2005 James Laughlin Award from the Academy of American Poets. She was born in Manila and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. She works as adjunct professor in Philippine studies at the University of San Francisco.

About the Author
Barbara Jane Reyes: Barbara Jane Reyes was born in Manila, Philippines and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. She received her undergraduate education at UC Berkeley, and her MFA at San Francisco State University. She is the author of Gravities of Center (Arkipelago, 2003) and Poeta en San Francisco (Tinfish, 2005), for which she received the James Laughlin Award of the Academy of American Poets.

The British Union of Feminists?

It is common received wisdom that Europe's fascist movements were reactionary in their views of women, and even misogynist in their ideologies and policies. If the street fighters and tough-guys hated women and wanted to stay in the kitchen, the eugenicists and scientists viewed them only as breeding stock. Few considered women human beings. So we are told.

Like much received wisdom, there is a grain of truth in such ideas. But by all appearances,it is a rather tiny one.

In this study, Martin Durham examines the ideas of various fascist movements relating to women. He aspires to a European perspective, but is by far the most thorough and successful in his treatment of the British Union of Fascists (or BUF, for short), Sir Oswald Mosley's British Nazi movement of the 1930s, where he makes extensive use of primary sources. As Durham shows, the BUF's views on women were the very antithesis of reactionary, and indeed several members of the old "Suffragette" movement were active in the BUF. Taking on one issue at a time, the author contrasts the well-worn clichés with the actual policy statements of Mosley and his cronies, with remarkable revelations as the result.

Thus we learn, for example, that the BUF not only did not oppose female employment outside the home, but in fact favored equal pay for equal work, with no regard for sex (p36f). Nor did the BUF oppose birth control measures (p38f) -- And in considering this, we must remember that such were not nearly as commonplace and widely accepted in the 1930s as they are today. (In fact, this permissive position cost the BUF some of its support from Britain's right-wing Roman Catholics.) More familiarly conservative, but still anything but hostile to women, was the BUF's stance on pornography and other sexual immorality, which it vigorously opposed (p42f). As might also be expected, pornography, prostitution and the white slave trade were generally identified with the Jewish element in British society.

Further, the BUF mobilized women for its activities: as support staff, but also as speakers and even candidates for the party's tickets for parliament. Sir Oswald is on the record proudly noting that his (comparatively minuscule) movement fielded more female candidacies than did either of the big national parties. The elite corps of the BUF's female cadre was trained in first aid and jujitsu, so they could defend themselves against the violent attacks of the leftist opposition (p50f). If that is not "empowering" (as the current jargon goes), then what is?

Of course, none of this means that the BUF were "feminists" as that word is currently understood; the title of this review is largely humorous. But then, ideological "feminism" as of today is quite divorced from the ideas of the old "Women's Rights" movement. These, as we can see, the BUF largely supported (for example, equitable wages for women workers); while this is not what we will tend to expect from a self-styled group of Nazis, their position is nevertheless quite clear from the evidence that Durham adduces. In acknowledging as much, Durham surely has no intention of in any way "rehabilitating" or promoting the BUF; but he professes a need for understanding fascism better, looking to the facts rather than to stereotypes. Drawing a parallel with modern right-wing movements (on which he is apparently an academic expert), he sees a danger that these are increasingly successful in recruiting female supporters. Should society wish to counteract this trend, he argues, it is necessary to understand how and why women are drawn to these groups, and a caricatured view of them is not helpful in this regard. While this reviewer is quite unfamiliar with such matters, and thus unable to comment on these particular facts -- His primary interesting being history rather than contemporary political sociology -- the argument as such appears a sound one.

In any case, Martin Durham's reappraisal of the (by the standards of its day) quite extraordinarily woman-friendly BUF is a welcome addition to our knowledge of historical Nazism. By and large, the only relevant complaint would be that the book's present title is somewhat misleading; the book focuses overwhelmingly on British matters, rather than women and "fascism" as an international phenomenon. This could have been made clearer. Still, this is quite a minor flaw to a highly original and useful work of historical scholarship.

Kindle version coments

The Kindle version of this book lacks page numbers, which makes following it difficult for classroom use when the professor says "on page....". Also in chapter three there is a note regarding the formatting: "Here we follow the convention of writing postulated semantic elements in small capitals to distinguish them from real words." However, in the text, I checked the Kindle version against a classmate's paper version & found that the Kindle version does not have the small caps in the text, making it difficult to make this distinction. Nonetheless, I think it will still be usable - I will update if I find myself needing to return it for a paper version.

Needs work

This book is a great idea in theory, and I was very excited about it when I found it. It is a great concept- 2000 questions with explanations. The problem is that the questions are just not very good, and some of the answers are just wrong. About 1/3 of them are absurd questions that a second year medical student should know; 1/3 are good board-prep questions; and 1/3 of them are decent questions but not nearly as difficult as what I would expect on the inservice or boards. It seems like about 1/2 the questions were likely written by someone without an otolaryngology background. The wrong answers can be frustrating; there is a link for each question to report errors, but there were so many of them that after a while I just started ignoring them.

This would be a fantastic book if these errors were corrected and about half of the questions replaced with more challenging questions. The remaining questions may not be worth the cost or time involved in using this book for review.

About the Author

Tom Rosendahl is associate professor in market communication at BI Norwegian Business School, Department of Leadership and Organizational Behaviour. He holds a PhD degree from the Department of Business Administration, School of Business, Gothenburg University, Sweden. His professional interests include marketing communication, cross-cultural communication, project communication, change management, and understanding the development in Integrated Operations. He has published widely and is the author/editor of 14 books, His latest books are entitled "Marketing in a Cross Disciplinary Perspective" (2008) and "Project Communication" (2010).

Vidar Hepsø holds a PhD in Social Anthropology from NTNU and is currently Principal Researcher/Project Manager at Statoil R&D in Trondheim Norway. He is also Adjunct Professor at the NTNU Center for Integrated operations in the Petroleums Industry. His main interests are related to new types of collaboration enabled by new information and communication technology (ICT) in general and in particular ICT-infrastucture development, capability platforms and collaboration technologies. The main work area the last 8-10 years has been within 'Integrated Operations' (IO) .Within this field of activities he is involved in both planning, execution and evaluation of IO activities in Statoil in addition to being project manager and a resource for branch specific research and development of IO in both Norway and internationally.

Norway's 'world leading,' digital oilfield initiatives described in 400 page volume discussing pros and cons of remote operations centers and implications for situational awareness and safety.

Integrated operations in oil and gas industry (IOOG*), subtitled ‘sustainability and capability development’ is a 400 plus page large format, multi-authored publication, with contributions from (mostly) academia and industry. In their introduction, editors Tom Rosendahl of the BI Norway Business School and Vidar Hepso (NNTU) relate integrated operations (IO) to projects like Chevron’s i-Field, BP’s Field of the future and others. While most oil and gas companies have some such initiative ongoing, according to Rosendahl, Norway’s IO initiative is ‘regarded by many as the world’s most advanced.’ The essence of IO is the migration of operations and personnel from the offshore to the onshore, thanks to the deployment of information and communications technology (ICT) and remote operations/collaboration centers.

In his introduction, Rosendahl summarizes some of the ‘issues’ around IO. At the turn of the millennium there was an ‘overoptimistic belief’ in the IO and its potential benefits. Much of the early work was technology based, remote control was ‘heralded with enthusiasm.’ At the same time, others argued that IO is all about ‘people and processes’ and not about technology. For Rosendahl, both views have proved wrong. Successful IO deployment requires restructuring of work processes and management, particularly management of change, is the key.

This is where the ‘capability development’ terminology of the book’s subtitle comes in. This Rosendahl defines as a holistic approach involving human skills, work processes, governance and technology to effect change. On which topic, IOOG acknowledges the role played by Tony Edwards and his Step Change Global consultancy. Edwards is mentioned 48 times in IOOG and is said to have introduced the capability framework into Norway.

Despite the ‘holistic’ claims, IOOG is really about the soft side of managing technology. It is also weighted to an academic viewpoint. An early chapter introduces the ‘capability platform,’ an information ‘ecology’ and more key buzzwords. Both people and technology are required for success. Network centric design ‘moves the center of gravity of the organization to the edge’ and enables ‘generativity’ of new ideas. Statoil’s IT is discussed but there is curiously no Statoil authorship in IOOG.

The ‘pinnacle’ of IO is the collaboration room, an onshore facility where operators and experts direct operations. But Norway’s large offshore facilities are still manned—requiring the collaboration room to be replicated offshore in what has come to be know as the ‘glass cage.’ An anonymized (but you know who it is) discussion of IO at a Norwegian oil company found a dilemma in that while the onshore/offshore teams have good shared situational awareness, sometimes offshore leaders ‘spend too much of their time in the glass cage.’ Email is reported as a ‘time thief’ and is showing no signs of abating. Overall the impact on safety remains moot. Moving workers onshore improves their personal safety but lessens their ‘situational awareness.’

Remote operations’ impact on safety is complex. Removing operators from an offshore site moves them away from danger, but even with a sophisticated remote operations center, it is hard to achieve the ‘situational awareness’ of being on-the-spot. In fact we misread the title of the penultimate chapter ‘IO as a contributing factor to major accidents.’ Surely there should have been ‘avoiding’ in there? But no, the authors take a hard nosed look at the risks induced by moving command away from operations.

Oil IT Journal has been following developments in Norway’s Integrated Operations initiative since 2004 and in particular, the Integrated Information Platform (IIP) which inspired a POSC (now Energistics) IO special interest group. We were therefore surprised that IOOG, despite having over 20 index references to ‘information and communications technology,’ makes no mention at all of the IIP. What we have always understood to be the IIP’s key technology, ISO 15926 and the semantic web are only mentioned (with no development) once each. This omission likely reflects what IOOG describes a ‘tribal war’ between those who focus on the ‘data and technology’ dimension and those who focus on the ‘human and social.’ It is clear which side of the tribal war IOOG is on! The self-imposed requirement to ‘balance’ people and technology prevents any serious discussion of automation, an awkward subject which the authors have largely avoided. But whether you are ‘techno’ or ‘people,’ IOOG provides many worthwhile insights—too many to present in this short review.

I am going to love having this book because I trust the authors experience. This week I have purchased four of Mr.Trottiers book and I am in love with the Screenwriters Bible, and so I got this guide as well. It has tons of examples (and I do mean tons) for specific situations.. I'm really glad I bought it.

If You're Screenwriting You Have To Know The Format.

This book by Dave Trottier is an adjunct to his Screenwriter's Bible. His bible covers a whole lot of topics you need to know including story structure, making attractive characters, marketing and a lot about formatting. Formatting can cover a lot of ground, however and this book answers the remaining questions any screenwriter needs to know. In particular it does an excellent job of covering action scripts, scripts where technology hits the screen (texting, etc.); multiple identity characters: and camera direction within a spec script. Frankly it covers a lot of other topics, these are the ones which immediately come to mind. Read this Dr. Format book in conjunction with the Screenwriter's Bible and you're good to go.

As Whitehouse follows the Trebings from Katie's diagnosis through Christopher's conception via in vitro fertilization to Katie's painful but successful bone-marrow transfusion, she also touches on some of the ethical issues surrounding savior siblings: who protects the child if he later is asked to donate other tissue or even a kidney to help the ailing sibling, and would the parents resent the donor sibling if the ailing sibling died after the bone marrow transfusion? Whitehouse's nimble explanations of complex medical issues in laymen's terms and her penetration of the Trebings' decision-making process will benefit other parents in similar circumstances. (Apr.)

'Savior Siblings' and painful choices

In "The Match: "Savior Siblings" and One Family's Battle to Heal their Daughter," reporter Beth Whitehouse recounts the agonizing but ultimately triumphant story that follows a family's discovery that their newborn daughter had a disease that could have eventually killed her.

That disease, Diamond Blackfan anemia, alone would have been difficult enough to handle. But Stacy and Steve Trebing eventually learned of a possible cure for Katie's illness, one that required serious soul searching, with longterm ramifications for their family.

They decided to seek a bone marrow transplant from a sibling, one who hadn't even been conceived yet. So began their journey through the world of genetic diagnosis and in vitro fertilization, and their own struggle to cope with the myriad ethical and moral issues brought about by that decision. The potential for failure was a constant presence as they took each step on a long and complex course of treatment.

Not the least of the many issues was how to deal with the moral issues of having a child to save another. What would the second child think of his own value? What if the transplant ultimately failed? The urge to quietly wonder what we'd do in similar circumstances is a constant companion as each setback or triumph occurs.

The Trebings seem like just regular people forced to face incredibly complicated issues fraught with all kinds of emotional questions. That they succeeded is remarkable, as is the fact that they managed to remain so united under such great pressure.

Whitehouse makes even the most ordinary developments and scenes compelling because they're part of the greater drama of the overall story. Her writing seems to put the reader right on the scene.

Anyone who has confronted life-and-death medical issues will recognize and identify with some of the internal debates the Trebings face. But few have had to face the multiple longterm choices forced on the Trebings.

Once confronted, they stood up with courage and grace. Their decisions, from the outside, may provoke some discomfort but then, fortunately, they aren't choices most of us will ever have to face.

I wanted the story, not medical commentay

I liked the story, but it was very hard to find it in this book since the author spent way too much of the book trying to convince the reading that the medical procedures the family used are morally acceptable.

Inspirational, real-life struggle and triumph

When the 5-day series that preceded this book ran in Newsday, I couldn't wait for the paper to come each day to find out what happened to this family, and especially to Katie. When I learned of the book, I had to read it to find out how the Trebings were now; to make sure all was well.

The book exceeded my expectations. Even though I knew the general story (from the Newsday series), I couldn't put it down. Whitehouse writes with such warmth and detail that you feel like you are sitting at the kitchen table or around Katie's hospital bed with this family, weighing in on what the next decision should be.

While the book has a fair amount of medical information, you don't have to be a physician to understand what's going on. For me, it was more about the story of this family's difficult decisions and the roller coaster ride they took for the sake of saving their daughter. You can tell they are real people; a family you could see yourself being friends with. That's part of what sucked me in. Loved it.
