Separate Your Store From All The Others Out There
By J.Q.L. 4150
There are many bloggers on the internet, and many eCommerce businesses-- so, how does one distinguish oneself to the point of making it all profitable for You? This book is packed efficiently with a plethora of essential chapters covering every aspect of blogging for your online store, and with links throughout to online resources (the author's even provide a list of links they used to sites, if you are reading a hard copy).

I had a thousand questions when I sought out this book and then first cracked the cover. It seems the movement of traffic to a site should be easy: of course, it is not. Everything is right there if you simply have internet access and a device of some sort to actually access it! But this is far from the truth. Yet, as we are shown herein, this is Not 'a mountain too high.'

This book breaks it all down into 8 manageable chapters. Beginning simply, we get to cover content, traffic, building an audience & more ... the Basics of Blogging for Beginners, as it were, but essential and the ideal place to get our feet wet. Next we go over actual tactics for our strategy: what are listicles, including 'How To's' and interviews, and more.

Further, Keywords are vital for people (potential customers) searching online: lure them in. The authors take us through using certain features on Google, in particular-- and given the ubiquitousness of Google it is crucial to learn how to use it. But also phrases & tools and much in between to make the most with the right bait.

If you are not a writer, this is something you will have to overcome. But it is Not difficult.. hang in! This is about simply relating to the reader out there, description, using email, outsources-- a singularly critical chapter here. Of course we go through dressing up your posts, graphics and more also. And all throughout we get links of real sites the authors highlight for numerous helpful reasons.

RSS, webmasters, permalinks, slugs-- there is a lot in here you have probably heard about before, but maybe didn't quite know what it all was. It is explained easily for us. Some further work in the realm of SEO (search engine optimization), and how to share your posts the most effectively, I.E., using social media (we've all heard of this, but don't be frightened it won't bite ;), and so on.

If I write any more on it I would have my own book to publish-- and it would look suspiciously just like this one! I love this book, helpful, frank, and presented perfectly for the lay person and is sure to help other bloggers as much as it did me.

Great Read!!!
By Ryan Whitwam
I definitely recommend this book if you are just starting out. I have a small ecommerce site and we sell holistic dog treats. I know I was supposed to be blogging but couldn't get motivated. Wasn't sure blogging would work either. The book does a good job of going through step by step how to do it and also gave me a lot of ideas to write about.

I'm not much of a writer but at least know where to start now. Some of it is a little over my head but I can start with the basics and then may go back to do the heavy duty stuff. Would recommend if you are new to blogging.

better blogs
By Devon
Right now I run a personal blog, and that is exactly what got me hired to my most recent job. My best girlfriend and I decided to take our little shop to the next level and start blogging and using social media to ensure that our sales would rocket.
I love to blog and I know a bit about tailoring your writing, but I have no idea how to sell online through a blog. How to get people to trust me without interacting with me or the product personally.
This guide is very helpful and really lays it all out on the table with the proper tools to ensure your business blog kills it in blogosphere. This has been an amazing guide to help us properly enhance traffic to our site.

The papers included here cover a wide range of issues: fundamental studies of the turbulence problem, practical applications of turbulence, superfluid turbulence, cryogenic facilities and capabilities to support the demands of cryogenic turbulence research, and new types of miniature flow instrumentation. All of these topics are crucial for high-Reynolds-number research. The papers give a state-of-the-art assessment of the use of helium flows - on the one hand, for turbulence research at very high Reynolds and Rayleigh numbers and, on the other, for testing navy and aerospace models under realistic parameter ranges. The editors have provided two survey papers, and a number of pioneering papers are included.

May be the WORST neuro book ever written!!!
By A Customer
This is the WORST science book I have ever brought. Here are just few of the MANY problems: 1) The text is full of grammatical and factual errors. (Note: I am talking about errors in neuroscience basics, not error due to new discoveries.) 2) The contents within each chapter are poorly organized and confusing. 3) Illustrations rarely, if ever, match the content within the text. For example, sometimes the text mentions a structure but that structure is nowhere on ANY illustrations within the chapter. 4) A shameful index. Very often there will be a neuro word I don't know and have not encountered in previous chapters. I go to the index and guess what? The index points me to the page I started with!!! 5) No glossary. He doesn't define the word in the text. He doesn't redirect with the index. You are basically going to have to grab another neuro book for the definition! 6) The title page claims 100+ color photos. Don't be fooled. That just means he added blue in the pictures. 7) Oh, did I mention there are multiple illustrations that are FLAT OUT WRONG!!! How can the editors of Springer Verlag let this be published!??!?!? Do yourself a favor. If you have this book, BURN it (or write the author for a refund)!!!! If you don't have this book, DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!

Good, good book
By abid
This is my kind of neuro book. It's integrated; it's multidimensional; its logical; and it makes neuroscience as 'mathematical' as biology can get. What does that mean? Well, it makes cramming unnecessary; to quote Poincare, there are two abilities in learning mathematics: one is sheer memory for steps in a chain of reasoning; the other, in his view by far more important, and which this book facilitates, is an appreciation of the nature of the links between propositions. If these links have been appreciated, the exact identity of the steps becomes less important because, if necessary, they can be reconstructed. This is the finest neuroscience book for its level I've come across; and if I go on to win the Nobel Prize, I know who to thank.

This is a poorly written book, with many errors. It is confusing, contradictory and badly organized. Avoid if at all possible.

Psychology Around Us, 2nd Edition, by Ronald Comer, Elizabeth Gould

Comer and Gould's Psychology Around Us demonstrates the many-often surprising, always fascinating-intersections of psychology with students' day-to-day lives. Every chapter includes sections on human development, brain function, individual differences and abnormal psychology that occur in that area. These "cut-across" sections highlight how the different fields of psychology are connected to each other and how they connect to everyday life.

Every chapter begins with a vignette that shows the power of psychology in understanding a whole range of human behavior.  This theme is reinforced throughout the chapter in boxed readings and margin notes that celebrate the extraordinary processes that make the everyday possible and make psychology both meaningful and relevant.  The text presents psychology as a unified field the understanding of which flows from connecting its multiple subfields and reinforces the fact that psychology is a science with all that this implies (research methodology, cutting edge studies, the application of critical thinking).

    Psychology
    By Juggerknott
It's a good book for a Psychology intro class. Multiple chapters that go into details about Cognitive thinking, Child Development, Adult Behaviors, Perception and much much more. I only got this book because my Psych instructor is using this book, but if you want to learn psychology on your own then this is a good text book to do it with, there is a test at the end of each chapter, and the answers are provided on the back of the book... awesome for self study. Highly recommend for school / personal use. (beautiful hardback by the way, stunning.)

Not all racial incidents are racist incidents, Lawrence Blum says. "We need a more varied and nuanced moral vocabulary for talking about the arena of race. We should not be faced with a choice of 'racism' or nothing." Use of the word "racism" is pervasive: An article about the NAACP's criticism of television networks for casting too few "minority" actors in lead roles asks, "Is television a racist institution?" A white girl in Virginia says it is racist for her African-American teacher to wear African attire.

Blum argues that a growing tendency to castigate as "racism" everything that goes wrong in the racial domain reduces the term's power to evoke moral outrage. In "I'm Not a Racist, But . . .", Blum develops a historically grounded account of racism as the deeply morally-charged notion it has become. He addresses the question whether people of color can be racist, defines types of racism, and identifies debased and inappropriate usages of the term. Though racial insensitivity, racial anxiety, racial ignorance and racial injustice are, in his view, not "racism," they are racial ills that should elicit moral concern.

Blum argues that "race" itself, even when not serving distinct racial malfeasance, is a morally destructive idea, implying moral distance and unequal worth. History and genetic science reveal both the avoidability and the falsity of the idea of race. Blum argues that we can give up the idea of race, but must recognize that racial groups' historical and social experience has been shaped by having been treated as if they were races.

    From Publishers Weekly
Media, politicians, social and political groups and individuals use the term "racism" casually and inaccurately, thereby stripping the concept of its meaning, argues Lawrence Blum in I'm Not a Racist, But...: The Moral Quandary of Race. Not all interracial difficulties involve racism, he contends, but society does not have the vocabulary to discuss racial overtones with greater subtlety. Thus people and institutions fearful of being called racist feel defensive when racial issues are raised, perpetuating the status quo of race relations. Blum (Moral Perception and Particularity), professor of philosophy and of liberal arts and education at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, asserts that only "certain especially serious moral failings and violations" merit the designation "racism." Discussing various scholarly perspectives on the construction of racial categories, Blum calls for a balance between "ridding ourselves of the myth of race" and understanding the role of race in social inequality and in history.

    From Booklist
The term racism has been so overused that it is in danger of losing its moral significance, according to philosophy professor Blum, who argues for clearer, more precise use of the word and related terminology. Blum examines related concepts and terms --institutional racism, personal racism, racist, racist beliefs--and their interplay as he explores the moral implications of racism on a multiplicity of levels. A section on "colorblindness" is especially enlightening, given the often-contradictory use of the concept. The author surveys the history of the concept of race and its associated development with the enslavement of Africans. While he argues that "race," as we generally use that term, does not exist, racialized groups as socially constructed do, with import and consequences often associated with that term. Blum recognizes the ideal of abandoning use of the concept of race, but also acknowledges the practical need to remedy wrongs of the past and present. This is a very thoughtful work on a sensitive subject, a good and practical work for all readers interested in race relations. Vernon Ford

"Discussing various scholarly perspectives on the construction of racial categories, Blum calls for a balance between 'ridding ourselves of the myth of race' and understanding the role of race in social inequality and in history."―Publishers Weekly

"This is a very thoughtful work on a sensitive subject, a good and practical work for all readers interested in race relations."―Booklist

"In his informative treatment of the concept of racism, Lawrence Blum is most concerned with the dangers of over-appropriation. He fears that the accusation 'racist' is now used so casually and widely that it is in danger of loosing its power to shame. . . . His is a book that can help untangle many of the individual issues that racism raises and is a most important contribution to the growing field of applied educational and social philosophy."―Teachers College Record

"Few topics are in such desperate need of clear analysis as the subject of race. . . . In this concise volume, Blum brings the precision of a moral philosopher to bear on this perennial American dilemma, with generally helpful results. . . . A fresh and important contribution to applied social philosophy, recommended for general readers, upper-division undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty."―Choice

"Blum's thoughts support his main argument: that calm, reasoned deliberation about injustices can give us the moral vocabulary we need to do better as a society."―Boston Review

"This is a useful reference for anyone who wishes to think intelligently about the problem of race."―MultiCultural Review

"This book combines clarity and compassion to an extraordinary degree, while surveying in an accessible way a vast range of thinking about race. It will be enormously useful to teachers, at both high school and college levels; it will advance the debate among those who think about race; but above all, its wide diffusion will benefit all of us as citizens of a racialized society."―Kwame Anthony Appiah, Carswell Professor of Afro-American Studies and of Philosophy, Harvard University

"In 'I'm Not A Racist, But . . .' Lawrence Blum offers answers for our time about what race is, who is a racist, and ways for people to talk about the racialized features of our society without falling into name-calling or defensiveness. With exemplary moral and analytic clarity, Blum offers educators, students, lawyers, judges, leaders, and citizens tools for building a nation of equality, comity, and respect for each person."―Martha Minow, Harvard University Law School

"Following the findings of modern science, Blum holds that (biological) races do not exist, but racialized populations do, as a consequence of the Western world's subordinating and inferiorizing other peoples as well as some of their own populations. He insightfully examines and interprets contemporary attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs about race in the United States and argues that 'race' is fundamentally a moral problem. In confronting this problem, Blum challenges us to recognize and distinguish the varied manifestations of this racialized world view, from extreme racism to racial insensitivity and ignorance, which carry different moral valences. An excellent, thought-provoking book, with powerful messages, that should be widely read."―Audrey Smedley, Virginia Commonwealth University

"This much-needed book challenges the idea that justice in a historically racist society can be achieved through a policy of race neutrality alone. Lawrence Blum shows the many ways in which racism involves more than just individual attitudes and discusses the concepts of race and racism in a philosophically insightful way. 'I'm Not a Racist, But . . .' is a most important contribution to the growing field of applied social philosophy."―Walter Feinberg, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

"With an impressive combination of moral acuteness, precision of reasoning, and wide-ranging empirical knowledge, Lawrence Blum, a fine philosopher, dissects our concepts of race and racism. He argues that 'racism' has all too frequently been a catch-all label for people and conduct of many different types, and that we will gain as a society if we make many more careful distinctions; between actions and traits of character, between the acts of dominant groups and reactive actions of subordinated groups, and above all, between racism, a morally grave failing involving inferioriaztion or animosity, and other moral failings, such as racial insensitivity, race-related ignorance, and deficient appreciation of individuality. Written in a lively, clear, and accessible style, Blum's book makes a major contribution toward a style of politics that rejects mere epithets and slogans in favor of thoughtful deliberation about shared problems."―Martha Nussbaum, Ernst Freud Professor of Law and Ethics, The University of Chicago

    A Really Important Book
    By A Customer
This book just has so much that's useful in it I forget that it's written by a philosopher; and yet everything the author says is said very carefully and is so well-reasoned. What is racism? What is race? Can blacks be racist too? These are some of the questions addressed. I really love the examples the author uses where he asks the reader to consider whether the response is "racist" or not and his references to current movies; and I don't think I've ever read a better "brief history" of race and racism. That chapter in particular is a must-read for those of us who teach sociology, psychology, or history courses in race or prejudice. His approach is so much more nuanced than most in his understanding of the social construction of race alongside his understanding that we can not forget that shared historical and social experiences mean something central to people. This book is destined to become a source that scholars and educators alike will turn to and recommend to others. Not a flash in the pan treatment of a trendy topic -- but a really important book!

    Simply Superb
    By David Schraub
A clear, engaging, and sophisticated analysis of America's most confounding problem. Blum outlines a progressive and compelling structure of how race works in America, how race talk is stifled, and how we overuse the term "racism." The most important thing his book adds to the discussion is not just that "racism" is an overloaded term. It's the call for a "more complex vocabulary" to deal with race. That is, in the status quo, one is either "racist" (evil) or not racist (good). This makes the definition of "racist" a scorched-earth battle, because the winner takes all. Blum argues convincingly that we should consider acts of racial insensitivity or subconscious racial prejudices to be really bad things, and work proactively to eliminate them, but should not necessarily tag them with the label of "racist". The simultanously concedes and turns the conservative objection that progressive race scholars are always "playing the race card" because it shifts the frame of debate--we need to discuss race issues, so we'll change the rhetoric we use, but we're not going to excuse bad conduct on your part just because it doesn't rise to the moral evil of slavery or Jim Crow.

An ounce of Clarity is Worth a Pound of confusion
    By Herbert L Calhoun
This is a mature, if not a rather sophisticated treatment of a painful subject in a society whose reality and consciousness still rests comfortably on a "soft Apartheid-like racist" social order. Very gently, Professor Blum, a renowned philosopher, guides and clarifies as he enlightens. In the process of stripping away some of the emotion-laden baggage associated with the word "racism," he shows that even in a race-based society there is considerable room for clarity and nuance.

This is a very useful contribution, especially in the way he makes us aware of how our hypersensitivity to the way the word "racism" is used, itself continues to play an important but unconscious role in helping to maintain and protect social advantages and at the same time continues to help stifle a smooth transition to full equality between the races. This is a powerful message all by itself and is alone worth five stars.

My only complaint about the book is that there IS such a thing as "nuance overkill," -- of achieving just a bit too much subtlety. After all, the conservative ideologue, Denesh d' Sousa, in his book "The End of Racism," speaks of his own shades and nuances of the word racism. He uses the euphemisms "strategic," "defensive," and "situational" racism, with equal facility and with equal claims to a need for clarity. According to him, these are also clarifications that fit the reality of many whites - people who just coincidently also happen to be those Americans anxious to avoid having the "albatross of racism" hung around their necks.

I do believe that the word "racism" can be sliced-and-diced, peeled back, and parsed and finessed so much that it is bleached of all its affective content - and is thus rendered into an emotionless abstraction. Now tell me, honestly, whose interests does this bleaching process really serve? Do we really want to do that in a race sensitive culture?

Are we pretending not to know that on the backside of all the emotion packed into the use of the word "racism" is also built a "moral hammer." The job of that hammer is to not allow whites to remain too snug in their comfort zone of continuing to impose "the ways of racism" on the rest of us. In a real sense, it is the only moral hammer that remains in American society. It is the only thing between us becoming a neo-racist and Fascist society, and one that continues to move "ever-so-imperceptively" towards the equality the U.S. Constitution was intended to achieve.

But more than this, at some point one must sit back and "call a spade a spade." And here the double entendre is not intended to refer only to blacks, but also to whites, who continue to be sensitive to the word "racism" primarily because of the guilt it induces about their passive roles in maintaining a race-based culture.

No whites should be allowed to forget or allowed to miss the point that the word "racism" recalls how much the very idea of whiteness, (upon which most Americans identities -- and indeed the very essence of their humanity rest), continues to ride on the crest of a mostly false history that has allowed them to accumulate and store enormous "racist" advantages.

Thus the word, "racism," no matter how it is parsed, no matter how nuanced, no matter how much subtlety is added to the soup of our national discourse, will always retain a sensitive spot in the white psyche. The word "racism" cannot be further "purged" or "defanged." There is a natural end point to this process of parsing the word racism. Beyond that, the circle of re-empowering racists begins all over again.

As Albert Einstein is reputed to have once said, "we should make things as simple as possible, but not simpler than necessary." The same applies to the word "racism." Sometimes, an ounce of clarity is worth a pound of confusion. At other times, too much clarity can falsify reality in unintended ways.

Still the best book on the subject in print. Five Stars

Superpower?: The Amazing Race Between China's Hare and India's Tortoise, by Raghav Bahl

Is India ready for superpower status or too far behind China to ever catch up?

In his career as one of India's leading journalists and entrepreneurs, Raghav Bahl has often faced this question, and many others, from bewildered visitors:
    * Why are Indian regulations so weak and confusing?
    * Why is your foreign investment policy so restrictive?
    * How come your hotels are world class, but the roads leading to them are so potholed?
    * Why don't you lower your voice when you make fun of your politicians?
    * Why do you control the price of oil and cable TV?

Clearly there's a huge difference in how India and its arch-rival China work on the ground. China is spectacularly effective in building infrastructure and is now reinvesting almost half its GDP. Meanwhile, India is still a "promising" economy: more than half its GDP is consumed by its billion-plus people, yet India has some unique advantages: Half its population is under twenty-five, giving it a strong demographic edge; 350 million Indians understand English, making it the largest English-speaking country in the world; and it's the world's largest democracy.

In the race to superpower status, who is more likely to win: China's hare or India's tortoise? Bahl argues that the winner might not be determined by who is investing more and growing faster today but by something more intangible: who has superior innovative skills and more entrepreneurial savvy.

He notes that China and India were both quick to recover from the financial crisis, but China's rebound was accompanied by huge debt and deflation, with weak demand. India's turnaround was sturdier, with lower debt and modest inflation. So India's GDP grew twice as fast as China's for a few quarters-the first time that had happened in nearly three decades. And in contrast to China's Yuan, which is pummeled for being artificially undervalued, India's rupee largely floats against world currencies. In the end, it might come down to one deciding factor: can India fix its governance before China repairs its politics?

With insights into the two countries' histories, politics, economies and cultures, this is a well-written, fully documented, comprehensive account of the race to become the next global superpower. For anyone looking to understand China, India and the future of the world economy, this is the book to read.

    From Publishers Weekly
Bahl, founder and managing director of India's largest TV news network, compares the superpower prospects of India and China in this meticulously researched but unevenly written study. Contrasting their foreign and domestic policies, cultures, and geographies, Bahl measures their potential for economic growth. Though China doubles its economy every eight years and "spends billion every day to develop world class infrastructure," India has its own advantages: it is the world's largest democracy, 350 million of its people speak English, half its population is under 25, and it boasts a "robust judicial system." Furthermore, India impressed the world with its resilience to the global economic crisis, rebounding with modest inflation, while China experienced deflation and a huge debt. But Bahl warns that India's dithering government could obstruct its potential, lamenting its failure to improve India's crumbling infrastructure while China's "democratic dictatorship" could stymie growth by discouraging innovation. Though the book offers valuable insights into the motivations of the world's two most populous countries, it could have been more tightly edited to eliminate repetition, clichés, and some awkward--occasionally bombastic--phrasing ("India's macroeconomics was beginning to allure"). While his book’s title is posed as a question, Bahl, who credits himself with helping to bring such American media brands as CNBC, CNN, MTV, and Forbes into India, is clearly arguing India’s case as a superpower counterpart to its “non-identical twin,” China. Bahl openly admires China’s white-hot pace of development and its seemingly unlimited financial reserves, but he points to India’s resilient democratic institutions, its relatively young population (median age: 25.3), and its fiscal prudence in resisting the economic forces that ultimately devastated so many of the world’s economies in September 2008. Bahl’s cheerleading for India can wear thin, and he does not address such mitigating issues as India’s conflict with Pakistan and the possible environmental damage of a more developed India. Still, his book will clear up a lot of misperceptions about the nature of his country’s socioeconomic path. --Alan Moores

gives a perspective on how Indians view themselves in a global context
    By Salem Almudhaf
I read half of it before it started repeating itself. Overall, a good read that gives a perspective on how Indians view themselves in a global context with a few history lessons on India and China. The US's relations with either country plays a big part in this book. You do learn a thing or two about these two countries, like how China is using Africa as its source of raw material and to increase consumption to compensate for the lack of its own internal consumption. The moral from this book is that China and India may race each other, but most likely will not replace America as a true superpower due to their own shortcomings.

    Good Information -
    By Loyd Eskildson
India and China are two of the most talked about emerging nations; they also are neighbors with one billion-plus populations. Bahl, founder, controlling shareholder, and editor of India's largest TV news and business network, compares the superpower prospects of India and China in "Superpower?" while contrasting their status along a number of dimensions.

Both China and India were giants in the 17th and 18th centuries, with China accounting for 28% of the world GDP in 1600 and India another 23%. When China began its reforms in 1978, its economy was smaller than India's. China is now investing nearly half its GDP - no other economy has ever done this, per Bahl. Japan at its peak was only investing 30% of GDP. China is also challenging the axiom that political freedom is required for continual innovation, and using mandated prices of foreign currency. Bahl is a bid skeptical about some of that investment, however, pointing out that China may have added 60 million tons of steel capacity in 2009 when over 150 million tons of capacity went unused the prior year, its excess cement capacity is thought to exceed the combined consumption of the U.S., India, and Japan, and large amounts of new office space are unused. (Other sources provide a partial explanation - that China is replacing older, energy inefficient/highly polluting manufacturing plants.) Other China problems include severe environmental damage, and a high level of bad loans. Bahl also points out that FDI in China is encouraged with triple discounts - cheap land (expropriated from farmers), cheap labor, and cheap currency (also cheap loans). Its service sector contributes just one-third of total GDP.

India saves nearly 40% of its GDP, with the bulk coming from households, while the bulk of China's comes from its state-owned enterprises (SOEs). India's SOEs produce less than 10% of total output (China's ten largest firms are SOEs or led by a party official), its rupee currency floats, and it is the youngest large country in the world (half a billion of its population is less than age 25).

India borrowed much of its legal structure from England, while Mao repudiated China's existing written legal framework when the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) took over in 1949. Unlike Western societies, Chinese law is not based on inviolable principles - it is more administrative than legislative. Practically everyone takes orders and direction from the central or local CCP. Human rights activists are a targeted species, and local judges' salaries are paid by local officials and required to pass decisions 'beneficial' for the locality. (No wonder corruption is such a problem in China.)

Prior to China's reforms, India had a large lead over China in railroad trackage. China has since overcome that lead. In 1951 India had 53,600 km of railroad tracks - increasing just 18% in the next 60 years while China's more than tripled. India's rail passenger fleet is now 10% air-conditioned vs. China's 60%, and its passenger trains average 55 km/hour compared to China's 200-430 km/hour (averaged just 48 km/hour in 1993). Chinese rail employees down to the level of station-master are required to put a deposit at risk, the amount depending on their rank - if financial commitments are not made they lose the deposit, while they can get their deposit doubled by exceeding targets. A major accident leads to forfeiture of the deposits - this contributes to China's railways being one of the world's safest despite also being the busiest. Top rail management in China is organized along the two lines of business - freight, and passenger. India's, on the other hand, is built along functional lines (mechanical, electrical, finance, traffic, etc.), and based mostly on seniority. China Rail also divested itself of 400 hospitals and 900 schools to local governments. Management also hived off train manufacturing into joint ventures with multinationals; it retains research institutes and specialist universities to help it absorb the latest railroad technology. India's railways are further hobbled by four track gauges, using AC in some areas and DC in others, and differing voltages for its electric engine units within the AC category.

China handles 14X India's volume of container traffic, is building the world's biggest shipyard near Shanghai in Yangtze delta, and already has 58 shipyards. India is almost a non-existent entity in ship-building.

China has 790 gigawatts of electric production, about 5X that of India. Its rice yields are 3X/acre those of India and 2X for wheat. China has also achieved much better road, airport, education, port, and hospital facilities than India. "Superpower's" treatment of how India and China are addressing energy for the future is much too skimpy; however, here China is undoubtedly far ahead of India, thanks to remarkable accomplishments in boosting reliance on renewable sources, improved energy efficiency, shifting to less intensive industries and services, and procuring resources for the future.

Bahl also doesn't go into retirement funding. Elsewhere it is reported that China mandates employee (up to 8% of pay) and employer (20%) contributions that are portable, and recently boosted retirement age to 65; retirement funds, except for voluntary supplementary benefit contributions, are administered and invested by the central government (not spent as in the U.S.) in mostly private Chinese and Taiwanese firms. It's retirement plan for rural workers is less generous, still a work in progress. Full funding does not yet exist. (Business China, 11/10/10; Global Times, 1/2/2011).

China's primary school science and math teachers must have degrees in those subjects. McKinsey (2005) found only 10% of Chinese graduate applicants to multinationals were qualified - their biggest failings were an inability to speak English, and lack of practical skills for engineering graduates. McKinsey found the same percentage of qualified applicants in India, but there the problem was poor education from its mostly private schools (80% of its engineering, medical, and management schools are privately run).

China tried changing to a market-oriented health system after Mao's death. Some services were improved, but care fragmentation, underfunding, equity and access problems, and soaring costs (40X increase in annual/capital spending on health services from 1978-2002) similar to those in the U.S. also resulted. China now is returning to a more public system with the leading role by public hospitals, and mandatory employer insurance and worker medical savings accounts. Regulated competition, modeled after Russia, may become the model for China. The current Minister of Health (Zhu Chen) is one of the two ministers not members of the CCP.

Near the end, Bahl admits that he began the book with the notion that the world underestimates India's strengths - a liberal democracy, constitutional freedoms, entrepreneurial savvy, independent media, youthful citizens, and an evolved judiciary, and instead sees its endless government delays, ineptness (made a mess of Commonwealth Games preparations, vs. China's perfectly executed Olympic Games) and corruption, poor infrastructure, illiteracy, violence, and terrorism (Pakistan, Muslims). Now he instead believes the world has underestimated China's drive, ambition, ability to do w/o democracy, rising incomes, education, health, infrastructure, and economic options ($2.6 trillion in foreign reserves, $1.1 trillion in foreign direct investment, large trade surpluses). It appears that private freedoms (property ownership, flexibility in earning money) may prove of greater importance than public ones - free speech and politics. Bahl also believes that China may founder if its ambition morphs into aggression. Bahl now also fears India's democratic strength may be overestimated by the world. It's state is deeply dysfunctional and unambitious (like the U.S.), too isolated and unwilling to learn from the Western world until recently. Without new Indian (and American) leadership, China will win out. China has been succeeding by writing new economic development practice, despite innumerable predictions of its imminent collapse.

Bottom-Line: "Superpower?" provides interesting points of comparisons between China and India, as well as some additional insights into some of our own major problems - Social Security, health care, and dysfunctional government.

    Incredible balance and insight
    By Tim Rouse
I found this book a page turner, as interesting as a good mystery novel and as valuable as the best non fiction books I have read in the past year. I particularly like the fact that the author proved his own hypothesis wrong , admitted it, and explained most persuasively what is likely to happen. There were times that his tendency to flip from stories about one of the countries to a story about the other was a bit annoying. But overall, I believe he made his points extremely well. Having worked In India the past three years and china the past twelve years, I can say that everything in the book had face validity for me and much of it mirrored personal experiences I have had. I highly recommend this book.
