Through autobiography, they look backward in time to see their lives as leading up to their participation in the prayer group or in some cases moving to Emmitsburg. Through relationships with Our Lady, their lives are enriched and even transformed. When they negotiate institutional loyalty and individual autonomy, they affirm their own authority and Catholic identity. Finally, through social media, they expand their devotional networks in ways that shift authority structures and empower individuals. Individuals engage beliefs, practices, and attitudes both arising from and resisting elements of modernity, religious pluralism and religious decline, empowerment and perceived disempowerment, tradition and innovation, and institutional loyalty and perceived disloyalty to reveal one way of understanding Catholic identity amidst the shifts and flows of modern change.

About the Author
Eve S. Buzawa is a professor and chairperson of the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at the University of Massachusetts–Lowell. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Rochester as well as her Master’s and Doctoral degrees from the School of Criminal Justice, Michigan State University. She has authored and edited numerous books and monographs. Recent publications include Violence Against Women in Families and Relationships: Making and Breaking Connections, a four-volume set (co-edited with Evan Stark, 2009). Professor Buzawa has also served as a principal investigator on several federally funded research projects and has directed numerous state-funded research and training projects. She is past president of the Society of Police and Criminal Psychology, past president of the Northeast Association of Criminal Justice Sciences, and past board member for the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.

Carl G. Buzawa is an attorney in private practice. Currently, he is Senior Vice President―Contracts, Legal, and Compliance at Textron Systems. He received his BA from the University of Rochester, his MA from the University of Michigan, and his JD from Harvard Law School. With Eve S. Buzawa, he is the coauthor of numerous books and articles on the topic of domestic violence.

Evan Stark is a sociologist, forensic social worker and award-winning researcher with an international reputation for his innovative work on the legal, policy and health dimensions of interpersonal violence, including its effects on children. Dr. Stark’s award-winning book, Coercive Control: The Entrapment of Women in Personal Life (Oxford, 2007), was named the outstanding social science book published in 2007 by the Association of American Publishers and influenced the United Kingdom and other countries in Europe to expand their definitions of domestic violence to include coercive control.  With a Ph.D......University, he is Professor Emeritus at Rutgers University where he held appointments in Public Affairs, Public Health and Women and Gender Studies. Dr. Stark has held visiting appointments and Fellowships at the University of Essex,  the University of Bristol,  the  Escuela Superior de Economía y Negocios (ESEN) in El Salvador and, most recently, as the. Leverhulme Visiting Professor at the University of Edinburgh.  Since his retirement, Dr. Stark has done extensive work on imporiving the response to abuse women in Turkey, as part of the State Department's "U.S. Speaker and Specialist Program" as well as in Serbia, Taiwan and throughout the United Kingdom.

Clear and comprehensive

I had to read this book for a graduate class. It is one of the clearest and more comprehensive textbooks I have read. The authors present an amazing amount of material in a straight-forward, easy to understand manner. If you're looking for a book to cover domestic violence and the response, this is it.

I purchased this book for use in a college Domestic Violence class and the book was full of statistics rather than information about violence. SO it depends on what the book is needed for whether it will be helpful. Personally, I was not a fan. It was shipped and delivered on time and was in great condition! 2 Thumbs up to the seller!

This is not a review, but an added fact

Another name for him is Han Feizi or Han Fei Zi. He is famous for the legalism theory which is similar to the western idea of "rule of law". Thus rather than a King making decisions , decisions followed prescribed policies. Also known as a bureaucratic style of governing vs tyranny from a dictator or King. I plan to get this book. Han Feizi's book the "Symptom of a Collapse" (of countries) was mentioned in the Korean TV drama A Yaksa (on Netlix), which is where I learned about him.

emphasis on firing techniques, not kilns

This is a very worthwhile and contentful book, just not what it seemed from the brief desciption. Hopefully this clarification is helpful to others:

This book's editorial description, along with the title, seem to suggest that its focus is in how to create various homemade ad hoc kilns (for those that don't have ready access to a kiln already). It talks about kiln building, and never uses the word raku.

Basically, however, this is a raku book, with lots of interesting variations. "Barrel" and "pit" kilns (mentioned in the subtitle) turn out to be just more forms of raku, rather than new kinds of homemade kilns. It contains many creative firing ideas with wonderful results, generously shared by a number of contributors. Along the way, of course, they do tell you how to put together firing chambers for these firing techniques. So it does provide some alternative kiln construction guidance with variations, but not the quantity I was expecting. And the firing techniques were an unexpected bonus.

In style, this is a thin "coffee-table book" - lots of great photos, widely set lines of type, artistic white space. But the content is fascinating and invaluable to anyone who wants to do firings that are more interesting than simply closing the door and turning on the heat. Initially, I was disappointed when I saw how the content of the book was padded out with white space, but after I started reading I realized how much great information was in it.

I would like to see much more expanded content (not counting the gallery & appendices, it is 89 pages). However, this does provide plenty of ideas to try for quite some while. I just need to find a different alternnative kiln book for when I'm not doing raku style firings. (The publisher could really help out here, by giving the table of contents, which really does give an accurate idea of the book content).

I just received this book and it is absolutely one of the best Raku books going! It is well laid out with many high quality pictures showing the technique or concept being presented. Covers much more than raku with many other firing techniques. Has a fantastic picture gallery with fine examples of pieces created with the techniques in the book and a glaze recipe section with references back to the pieces the recipes were used on.
A must have for anyone interested in raku or any of the related firing techniques!

Alternative Firing Techniques

What a wonderful book. As a ceramic sculptor, I appreciate the Raku, Pit, Barrel and Saggar firing methods. It gives one enough of the technical details of the how-to's of each of the firing methods (and how to build a raku kiln, and barrel and pit kilns) to get one started. It also "fires" up one's imagination to expand the contents of the book and to push your work to another level. This book presents beautiful examples of what "Alternative Firing Techniques" can produce.
