About the Author
David Sauter is currently an instructor at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, California and is a registered Landscape Architect in the State of California. Prior to his teaching career, Mr. Sauter practiced as a consulting landscape architect in the Midwest. He has additional experience in plant maintenance, plant installation, landscape construction, masonry, carpentry, paving, and landscape management and has presented seminars for the nursery industry, master gardeners, extension services and public service organizations. David Sauter earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Landscape Architecture at Iowa State University and his Master of Arts Degree in Higher Education from The University of Iowa.

An Essential Resource For Landscape Contractors

I'm glad I decided to buy this book, despite its high price. Having just recently become a landscape designer/contractor, it proved invaluable many times in the course of our company's first big job. For example, the sections on stone paving were very helpful when we were building a flagstone patio, as they helped us select the best foundation and edging materials.

I like the way the book is arranged, i.e. having a large section on paving, beginning with materials and site preparation for paving in general. This is followed by a chapter on each of the specific paving materials, such as concrete, unit pavers, dry laid stones, mortared paving, and granular paving.

The extensive section on retaining walls, which I am about to take advantage of in our next job, is arranged similarly.

This book is the industry standard. It is used as a text in City College of San Francisco, and it is also listed as a resource in the California Contractor's State License Board's Study Guide for the Landscaping (C-27) License Examination.

So if you want to do landscape construction, I highly recommend this one.

Landscape Construction-David Sauter

I found this book to be very thorough and detailed in its approach to a variety of landscape construction issues. It has detailed pictures and diagrams that illustrate the processes and make it easier to understand. The information is up to date, easy to read and a great learning tool for the student, professional or hobby person. As a landscape student, I find it a great resource book.

This book is full of incredible and professional information related to Landscape Construction. It's not meant to be a DIY book you'd get from Home Depot or Lowes. This book is meant for students and professionals wanting to learn best practices regarding Landscape Construction. Amateurs, landscape designers and architects can gain some valuable insights, too. We used this book as our textbook in the various landscape construction classes I took, studying to be a landscape designer.

About the Author

James B. Campbell is Professor of Geography at Virginia Tech, where he teaches remote sensing, quantitative methods, and geomorphology. He has worked closely with students and faculty in related fields such as forestry, geology, agronomy, environmental sciences, and planning. Since 1997 he has served as Codirector of Virginia Tech’s Center for Environmental Applications of Remote Sensing (CEARS). The author of numerous technical articles and several books, Dr. Campbell has received the Outstanding Service Award and the Fellow Award of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. He is also a recipient of the Outstanding Service Medal awarded by the Remote Sensing Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers. Dr. Campbell has been active in the AmericaView Program, including service as a principal investigator for the VirginiaView consortium and as a member and chair of the AmericaView Board of Directors.   Randolph H. Wynne is Professor in the Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation Department at Virginia Tech. He also serves as Remote Sensing Team Leader for the Forest Productivity Cooperative, Associate Director of the Conservation Management Institute, and Codirector of CEARS. He teaches courses in forest photogrammetry and spatial data processing and remote sensing of natural resources. Dr. Wynne’s research interests are in the applications of remote sensing to forestry, natural resource management, ecology, ecosystem services, and earth system science.

Organization and writing style of this text are both excellent. Campbell's explanations of technical details are understandable and complete. Readers should know this is an "all about" book and not a "how to" book with a limited discussion of software used in remote sensing applications.

This book covers all of the basics as well as some advanced material so I'd highly recommend it for any student serious about remote sensing. The diagrams/pics were very helpful and it was a great supplement to my lecture.

Nils Dalarsson has been with the Royal Institute of Technology, Department of Theoretical Physics in Stockholm, Sweden, since 1999. His research and teaching experience spans 32 years. Former academic and private sector affiliations include University of Virginia, Uppsala University, FSB Corporation, France Telecom Corporation, Ericsson Corporation, and ABB Corporation. He holds a PhD in Theoretical Physics, an MSc in Engineering Physics, and an MSc in Education.

Mirjana Dalarsson is affiliated with the Research and Development program at Ericsson Corporation. She holds a Licentiate degree in Engineering Physics and has more than 25 years of research and teaching experience. Former affiliations in the academic and private sector include the Royal Institute of Technology, Belgrade University, Uppsala University, and ABB Corporation.

All the Math You Need for GR

This book, alone, was what got me through my General Relativity course. The text we were using didn't include much math, and the professor didn't want to discuss the mathematical aspects of what we were doing. So I came upon this book armed with a vague physical understanding, but mathematically clueless. Fortunately, this book seems to have been written for precisely such a situation!

In a remarkably clear and concise manner, this book manages to:
- introduce the notations that are commonly used
- demonstrate how a physical system can be represented using the new formalisms
- outline the common mathematical operations that can be performed under this formalism
- describe how these operations are different from similar operations that the reader is already familar with
- show how these mathematical operations are physically relevant to a particular system

The other mathematical texts on this topic all seem to start off slowly with several chapters full of things that, as a physicist, I don't particularly want to know about. This book, by contrast, simply skips right to the parts that are relevant to relativistic calculations, and as a result the reader need not waste time trying to understand mathematical concepts that will not be useful to him.

In short, it's absolutely perfect if you need help with the mathematical aspects of relativity. Its physical explanations are brief, however, so if it's the physical concepts themselves that are troubling you, it might be better to start with a more descriptive book.

One of the best

This book starts out with a walk through the gymnastics of manipulating tensor indices's. Tensors can have any number of indices's attached to them. Learning to work with these indices's comes up many times for example in QFT(Quantum Field Theory). It is really basic, but until you see it done a number of time(as in this book) it can be quite confusing. This book teaches you to do this, and does a very good job. This includes the famous Einstein summation convention.

The book also covers co-variant derivatives, which are really important for taking derivatives in curvilinear coordinate since the unit or basis vectors change. Again the book does an excellent job of explaining this. This leads to the next subject of Christoffel Symbols, which come up when taking a co-variant derivative. The book explains these in terms easy to understand.

The book then goes into differential geometry. This is where the book really shines. This section is really a critical part, since you will need the ideas learned here to derive Einstein Field Equations. There is just the right amount of theory here so you can understand what is going on under the hood, but not too so much that you lose all prospective of what is going on.

Then this book covers special relativity. The book really shines here since the approach is a mature one, not watering down the math, but not over doing it either. The book has now taught you about Tensor Analysis, so the author can use it to cover special relativity. A lot of special rel. books do not cover special rel. using this mature approach, they tend to water down the math, but this book has prepared you for it so why not use it.

Also in the Special Rel. sections your Electrodynamic skills will be improved. You are now re-introduced to Maxwell's equations. You might have seen some of the mathematics before in an Electrodynamics course, but this book has given you the math skills you need to really understand it. So now you learn the tensor way to express Maxwell's equations. At this point you start feeling good about your Tensor Analysis skills. You seem to feel the whole universe coming together.

Then the moment you have been reading the book for. The author's start covering General Relativity. As you start reading this part of the book you start feeling good. You are really able to follow what is being done, because the book has done it's job and you have all the background to follow along. Then the most magic moment comes as you are shown how the metric tensor(g) is really the gravitational potential. And now it all comes together and you see how geometry plays a roll in the theory of gravity.

The rest of the book is applications of Einstein's field equations to cosmology. The book also goes into black holes. These are the hardest sections of the book but again the book does such a good job of teaching you what you need, these sections also flow.

In order to get the full benefit from this book you must go through all the steps in the book. In reality most of it is just algebra. I also recommend supplementing this book with Schaum's outline on Tensor Calculus. A lot of people way more knowledgeable in the subject than I am have also recommended this book.

Relativity Demystified is another good book, but it takes a little different approach than this book. It uses Cartan's equations to calculate the Christoffel and Ricci Tensors, but a lot can be learned from doing things a different way. The method called one-forms is really important in learning other subjects. I really recommend Relativity Demystified to get a fuller background for when you read more advanced books. It has typo's and wrong equations in it, but you can find them.

After studying these three books you will be ready to read way more advanced books. These books also give the background required to understand QFT since it requires a very good understanding of Tensors and Relativity. A lot of people have trouble with QFT not because of their Quantum Mechanics skills but because of their lack of Tensor and Relativity skills.

When you are finished you will find General Relativity is not so hard, and there are really only a few ideas behind the whole subject. I always like to supplement textbooks with at least one or two other books. Finding the books that best supplement a books is sometime hard and I have helped you with two in-expensive books.

The does an excellent job of developing the mathematics associated with these subjects

The book is mostly mathematics, exactly what it claims to be, with just enough narrative to keep the reader oriented. I completed my second pass through it, this time working through the math in detail with pencil and notepad. The exposition is tractable. The book is self-contained although vector calculus, partial differential equations, and linear algebra are necessary background. There are no problems to solve but after developing the mathematics, Chapter 19 presents the Schwarzschild solution in detail by applying basic results and illustrating how to organize the material to develop solutions. The does an excellent job of developing the mathematics associated with these subjects.

A "How to" Book of value to the model builder and collector alike

At the outset I have to confess that, at 71,I no longer possess the eyesight or hand-eye coordination to craft a model boat from scratch. I build from kits---plastic ones at that. I have commissioned a fine model from the authors--a 1/60 scale Nordhavn 62 you can find on their website. While John and Nancy were planning, drafting and building my model, they sent me some very intriguing CAD graphics showing how the project proceeded from Nordhavn's plan and profile drawings to the CAD design to create the lifts and templates for the model. So when I heard that these meticulous craftspersons had produced a book on the topic I was glad to order a copy. The book does not disappoint. Whether you want to build a model from scratch,as the authors do, or simply knock out a paper model using the text as a guide (as I will attempt) the book provides great insight and practical assistance in transforming photos and plans of actual boats into models. Both theory and practice are very well presented and described, the authors divulging the secrets of faithful boat model building derived from long experience in building outstanding facsimilies of water craft for boat owners and admirers alike.

Not just a beginners book, very thought provoking.

I have been a professional modelmaker for 30 years, this book is perfect for all levels of model building. I feel that John and Nancy have great passion for model watercraft and it's hard not to feel the same way after reading this book. I love how John goes into "how to think like a modelmaker" in this book. This includes how to look at things as a puzzle rather than as a "problem". This is the essence of what a good modeler does, be positive and work hard to get the desired results. A great resource for anyone with a passion for building models, period. This book is a winner for anyone who desires to build scratch models at any scale.

This new book authored by John Into and Nancy Price is a boon to the model boat builder. Hard cover-bound and printed on quality coated stock, it's loaded with excellent and informative illustrations, explanations, useful tips on tools for the beginner and the experienced builder alike, and it's a wonderful addition to any modeler's collection. The authors even give you the plans for building a model boat out of paper and it's a wonderful project. I highly recommend this book to beginner and experienced modelers alike. Five Stars Plus!

Best so far

This is the best book so far to cover all the essential and state-of-the-art topics regarding earthquake engineering, such as earthquake mechanisms, basic soil dynamics, ground accelerations, Fourier spectrum (this is one of the best books to explain it), seismic hazard assessment, design response spectrum, structural response to strong ground motion and structural dynamics, code design concepts, soil-structural interaction, seismic response of nonstructural elements, base isolations, energy dissipating devices, to name a few. Excellent figures/drawings and examples.

Highly recommended

I have read quite a few book in Earthquake Engineering, but none of them had material organized quite like this. Earthquake Engineering is a vast subject which involves geoscience, geotechnical, structural, geography and many more subjects. I can say this one is a complete reference and presents the material in a articulate manner. Author has explained everything in very simple language and can be understood by anyone. It contains more than enough material you need to know about Earthquake Engineering. I would recommend this textbook to all Earthquake Engineering students and professionals.

Outstanding Book

Dr. Villaverde's treatment of earthquake engineering is in a league of its own. Having read this book cover-to-cover, I can state as an engineer that the author provides a comprehensive treatment of the subject matter which could only be made through many years of research in the field. This book is a veritable treasure trove of scientific information on topics covering soil dynamics, wave propagation, elastic and nonlinear response, general seismology and hazard/risk assessment, response spectrum methods and mitigation. If there's one book the practicing civil/structural engineer should have - it's this one...
